On Wednesday, New York Attorney General Letitia James said she’s investigating claims that the NYPD is singling out for aggressive enforcement of social distancing.
The New York Attorney General’s office highlighted a video taken in the East Village on May 2, showing a black man being tackled, punched, and dragged on the pavement before the officer knelt on his neck and handcuffed him.
On the other hand, instead of arresting people violating social distancing rules in the white neighborhood, the police issued them with masks instead, the New York Attorney’s office said.
The previous week on Friday, the New York Attorney General’s office requested the NYPD to submit documents and training materials on how the officers are being instructed to handle social distancing enforcement.
The NYPD spokesperson added that they were going to work closely with the New York Attorney General’s office to resolve the matter.
