In early March of 2020, longtime MSNBC political pundit Chris Matthews announced his retirement after hosting the cable network’s prime-time news show Hardball for 20 years.
After Matthews was out the door at MSNBC, word circulated about several anchors at the cable news station possibly taking his place.
At the time, Reid, 51, was already the host of her own morning talk show on MSNBC called AM Joy.
However, earlier this week, Reid made history when it was confirmed that she was named as Chris Matthews’ successor at MSNBC in the prime-time viewer slot.
By achieving this feat, Reid became the first black woman in the history of American television to host a prime-time cable news show.
