By MARILYNN MARCHIONE AP Chief Medical Writer A daily pill combining four cholesterol and blood pressure medicines taken with low-dose aspirin cut the risk of heart attacks, strokes and heart-related deaths by nearly one third in a large international study that's expected to lead to wider use of this 'polypill' approach. For more than a decade, doctors have been testing whether the cheap, all-in-one combo pills could make it easier to prevent heart disease, the top killer worldwide. Friday's results show their value — and not just for poor nations. 'It's for all sensible countries,' said Dr. Salim Yusuf of […]

[Thomson Reuters Foundation] Women bear the brunt of digital abuse - threatened with rape and exploited for porn - as the coronavirus pandemic drives ever more people online, media experts said on Wednesday.
With these words, the president-elect, Joe Biden, set a new tone and a new mood in Washington. No longer will the bully pulpit of the White House be used to spew lies and insults or to fan division and hatred. The White House will once again call on the “better angels” of Americans and not our “darkest impulses.”

ZANU PF has drawn parallels between opposition MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa and United States losing presidential candidate Donald Trump who has refused to concede defeat in the just-ended American polls. BY BLESSED MHLANGA Addressing a Press conference, Zanu PF acting spokesperson Patrick Chinamasa said Chamisa was Trump’s “perfect biological son”. “If you wanted to liken Donald Trump to any personality in our political arena, it will be Chamisa. In fact, it will be Chamisa. President (Robert) Mugabe was never defeated and never refused to vacate as we know historically. It is not true (that he was defeated). He was never defeated in any election as Zanu PF, as President Mugabe since 1980,” Chinamasa said. His statements came after top news channels in the US likened Trump’s actions to those of Zanu PF and the late former President Mugabe who was toppled in a military coup in 2017. Mugabe refused to step down after losing to the late MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai in 2008, leading to the formation of a coalition government. But Chinamasa had other views. “What sometimes people refer to as a defeat was in 2008 which led to the presidential rerun, where he trailed in the first run versus Tsvangirai,” he said. “In our case, our President (Emmerson) Mnangagwa won 50% plus over 400 000. So, we won overwhelming majority. There is no comparison of the antics of Trump to Zanu PF. If anything, he (Trump) taught Chamisa the wrong things and that is what I said.” Chinamasa said the US, through its embassy in Harare, taught Chamisa to refuse to concede defeat. Zanu PF accused the US of behaving in an undemocratic manner and holding sham elections, by Trump’s own admission. He said Zimbabwe had nothing to learn from the US elections which “exposed the rottenness of the country’s electoral system and so-called democracy”. “The just-ended elections in the US by all standards have turned into a circus, from allegations of vote fraud to unbridled vote counts leading to a week’s long stalemate before elections could be announced despite there being a clear leader, Joe Biden,” Chinamasa said, accusing the US of trying to lecture Africans about democracy yet they were busy running the “mother of all undemocratic” elections. “The Trump administration is, indeed, a threat to democracy and the global superpower must be stopped. In all the foregoing, we are however surprised by the silence of the United Nations, the European Union and their allies who have sought to prefect us on our electoral systems. “I am surprised by the silence of the US ambassador to Zimbabwe, Brian Nichols, who always wants to school us about democracy. “Where is he to tell us and update us about what is happening in the US and when his boss is going to hand over power to President-elect Biden.”

Avid Support Outside Court
Hundreds of supporters of Ace Magashule, the Secretary-General of South Africa's ruling African National Congress (ANC) party, staged protests on Friday as some even tried to force way into the magistrate's court in Bloemfontein, the capital of the Free State, where Magashule appeared for his hearing over alleged graft revolving around the equivalent of 13.9 million euros in contracts to audit houses with asbestos roofs — awarded under former president Jacob Zuma's corruption-tainted nine-year administration between 2009-2018. His successor Cyril Ramaphosa has vowed to root out corruption in South Africa, which has seen the ANC at the head of national politics since the icon Nelson Mandela came into power in 1994 after the fall of the white supremacist oppressive apartheid regime.
The court appearance follows an arrest warrant issued on Tuesday over Magashule's alleged failures to conduct oversight and report corrupt dealings.
The ANC said it would monitor developments closely.

Anti-Jihadist Operation in Mali
Reports on the death by troops from the French-led Barkhane force military operation of Bah Ag Moussa, described as the military commander of the Al-Qaeda-aligned Group to Support Islam and Muslims (GSIM) in the Malian desert who had been on a United Nations sanctions list and was believed responsible for numerous jihadist terrorist attacks on Malian and international ally forces in the region. BIKITA residents are up in arms with the local authority for allowing open market traders to camp at Makuvaza Business Centre without observing COVID-19 safety protocols. BY Garikai Mafirakureva Jethro Chuma, who is Bikita Business Community (BBC) committee member, said the open markets exposed them to the pandemic. “Traders at open markets come from all corners of the country. So chances of transmission of the disease are high,” he said. “These cases seem to be spiking again, so they need to be stopped. As residents and BBC, we are not happy at all with these open markets at the moment. The district administrator’s office and Bikita Rural District Council should do something to stop this.” Bikita district development coordinator Bernard Hadzirambwi, who is also district COVID-19 vice- chairperson, refused to comment on the matter and referred all the questions to council chief executive (CEO) Peter Chibi. Chibi said he had asked police to disperse the traders. lFollow Garikai on Twitter @garry4peace
The United Nations has called for urgent measures to protect civilians in northeastern Mozambique, who have fallen victim to an Islamist rebellion.
The jihadists attacked villages and killed several people in the Cabo Delgado province this week.
Rupert Colville is spokesman for the UN Human rights High Commissioner. He says the situation is now desperate.
\"The situation is desperate both for those trapped in conflict-affected areas, with barely any means of surviving, and for those displaced across the province and beyond. Those who remain have been left deprived of basic necessities and are at risk of being killed, sexually assaulted, abused, kidnapped, or forcibly recruited by armed groups\", Colville said.
The killing of civilians and clashes with security forces in various parts of Cabo Delgado province, have increased in recent weeks.
The UN sees the human rights situation \"increasingly alarming\".
Dozens of people are reported to have died and hundreds forced to flee their homes, the High Commissioner's office said.
According to the United Nations, over 350,000 people have been displaced due to violence in the region in the last three years.
It also said since October 16, more than 14,000 people have fled by sea. At least one boat has capsized, which is estimated to have killed about 40 people, including children. The Office of the High Commissioner fears that thousands more people are trapped in the conflict zones, many hiding for days.
The UN is also calling on Mozambican authorities to throw light on accusations of human rights violations against their security forces in recent years, including extrajudicial executions and ill-treatment.

BY CHARLES LAITON HIGH Court judge Justice Benjamin Chikowero yesterday recused himself from presiding over a matter involving suspended judge Justice Erica Ndewere saying he was conflicted. Justice Ndewere recently filed an application challenging Chief Justice Luke Malaba’s order to have her investigated for alleged misconduct. She also challenged the move to have her investigated by a sitting judge. Justice Chikowero becomes the second judge to recuse himself from the matter after Justice Moses Foroma said he could not handle the matter involving a colleague. In his ruling on Justice Ndewere’s application to have him recuse himself, Justice Chikowero said justice would not have been done if he insisted ion dealing with the matter, moreso given the fact that the suspended judge was his senior and they also worked together. “I sit on the High Court bench. So does the applicant (Justice Erica Ndewere). We are both stationed in Harare. She is my colleague,” Chikowero said in his judgment. “I was appointed to this bench on December 14, 2017. Since then, I have always been paired with applicant (Justice Ndewere) on the urgent judge duty roster. She is the senior judge. I am the junior judge. “This means the applicant has been my professional partner on that roster ever since I became a judge of this court. Professionally, I am, therefore, closely linked to the applicant.” He added: “Judicial office is a public trust. My view is that my continued sitting in this matter would not maintain public confidence in the Judiciary. “It would actually be an embarrassment to the Judiciary. It would bring the Judiciary into disrepute. Whatever my decision in the matter, justice would not be seen to have been done.” Justice Ndewere vowed to fight the Judicial Service Commission (JSC)’s move after the latter wrote to President Emmerson Mnangagwa asking him to set up a tribunal to investigate her alleged gross misconduct. Her lawyer Beatrice Mtetwa also confirmed the latest development. “We are now waiting for the appointment of a retired judge to deal with the matter,” Mtetwa said. “However, since Justice (Moses) Foroma recused himself, we wrote to the Judge President (George Chiweshe) to find us a retired judge to deal with the matter, but we have not heard from him and we are still waiting. “In fact, we were surprised when Justice Chikowero was appointed to hear our matter because we had raised some concerns over the issue of judges.” Justice Ndewere is facing allegations of gross misconduct in the performance of her duties, where it is alleged she caused the setting aside of the jail term of a thief, Kenneth Majecha, and referred the case back to the lower court for re-sentencing and recommended that he should perform community service on the basis that he was a youthful first offender. The JSC contends that Justice Ndewere was wrong about Majecha being a first offender as he had three previous convictions. But Justice Ndewere said she was being victimised for refusing to take orders from Chief Justice Malaba to deny bail to former
THE trial of Gweru MDC Alliance activist Tamuka Denhere’s wife, Lilian on charges of falsely claiming that her husband was abducted, is set to kick off on December 9. BY Stephen Chadenga Lilian (38) of Mkoba 3, Gweru, yesterday appeared before magistrate Edwin Marecha who advised her of the trial date. She is out of custody on $1 000 bail and is represented by Reginald Chidawanyika. The State alleges that on August 12 this year, Lilian filed a false police report that her husband had been abducted by security agents, although she knew he had been lawfully arrested for sending a threatening message to a political rival. She allegedly made the false report at Mkoba Police Station, leading to her arrest. The State alleges that the report was meant to tarnish government’s image and portray her husband as a victim of political persecution. lFollow Stephen on Twitter @jagganox78
