November 26, 2024 (JUBA) - South Sudan's President Salva Kiir said Tuesday that the Kenya-led Tumaini Initiative is not intended to replace the 2018 peace agreement, but rather complement it. While officially opening the 8th Governors’ Forum in the capital, Juba, Kiir said the formation of the government team is a testimony his administration is committed to implement the peace deal. He said everlasting peace can only be achieved when all stakeholders are included in the process. “The Tumaini initiative is not about negotiating a new deal, but seeking to bridge gaps and address concerns, ensuring inclusivity within the existing framework,” Kiir said on Tuesday. The South Sudanese leader downplayed fears that the initiative was about creating a new agreement, saying “Creating a new agreement would contradict the principle of inclusivity”. The talks, which had stalled, is due to resume in Nairobi, Kenya in the coming days. Kiir urged the state governors to strengthen their economies, create jobs and prioritize agriculture. “I urge state governors to find ways to attract investment and support food security,” he said.
