D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser is making a statement to Donald Trump after peaceful protests in the city over police violence against Black people.

Bowser’s “Black Lives Matter” street painting is clearly alluding to Trump’s actions.

In addition to all this, Bowser has been accused of accelerating gentrification in D.C. by approving a lot of developments that could push Black and low-income people out of their communities.

Bowser has ended the state of emergency for D.C. since protests over police violence have started.

Bowser shared a letter addressed to Trump for Thursday, in which she called on him to withdraw “all extraordinary federal law enforcement and military presence from Washington, D.C.”

However, No New Jails wasn’t buying this either.

Source: Yusuf Abramjee, founder of Tax Justice South Africa (29 April 2020)

Verdict

Explainer: Excise tax revenues for tobacco sales in April 2020, the first full month of the Covid-19 lockdown, were down more than R36 million daily compared to April 2019.

Conclusion: Abramjee is mostly correct, although tobacco tax collection varies significantly

Yusuf Abramjee, founder of advocacy group Tax Justice South Africa, claimed that the country loses \"R35 million each and every day\" due to the ban of tobacco sales enforced during the Covid-19 lockdown.

The data Abramjee had access to when he made the claim shows that R34 million in tobacco excise tax was collected on average every day in the last financial year.

Data released after Abramjee made his claim showed that the daily amount of tobacco tax collected in the first full month of lockdown, April 2020, was down R36.2 million per day compared to April 2019 and R60.5 million per day compared to April 2018.

New numbers released by revenue service

Two days after Abramjee made his claim it was reported that SARS had estimated under-recovery of roughly R400 million in \"cigarette\" excise taxes during the first 29 days of April.

met with Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) and paid a visit to the site where the mayor had “Black Lives Matter” painted on a road that leads to the White House.

“It was very moving to see hundreds of thousands of people from all over America and around the world take to the streets to speak up, to speak out, to get into what I call ‘good trouble,’ or to get in the way,” Lewis said of the recent protests this week.

Earlier this weekend, the words “Black Lives Matter” were painted in yellow on 16th Street NW on Friday.

The same day, Bowser also announced on Twitter that a section of the street, which she added was “in front of the White House,” had also been officially named “Black Lives Matter Plaza.”

Since its unveiling Friday, the two-block span has been the site of several demonstrations over the weekend as protesters continue to take to the streets against police brutality in racism following the police killing of George Floyd.

Weeks after St Ann’s Bay Mayor Michael Belnavis became embroiled in controversy over his stewardship of municipal funds, climaxing last Thursday with a demolition related to building breaches, Prime Minister Andrew Holness has reserved comment until he has been fully briefed.

Anti-corruption lobby National Integrity Action (NIA) has called for Belnavis to immediately resign following revelations of his role in a private company that captured government land and constructed a building in violation of the law.

The disclosure was made in a Sunday Gleaner report that showed how City Mall Management sought permission from the St Ann Municipal Corporation, which Belnavis leads, at least a month after works started.

In a statement on Monday, NIA said that if the mayor refuses to walk, the other 15 councillors in the parish should “put public interest above party” and expel the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) councillor for misconduct.

“Good practice demands that Mayor Belnavis do the right thing and separate himself from the high office of mayor,” said Professor Trevor Munroe, the head of NIA, a chapter of Transparency International, the global anti-corruption watchdog.

The street, where peaceful protesters were forced out of the way on Monday just before President Donald Trump walked through on his way to the now infamous Bible photo op, has been renamed Black Lives Matter Plaza—new street signs and all.

Inside the palatial walls of Belgium’s Africa Museum stand statues of Leopold II – each one a monument to the king whose rule killed as many as 10 million Africans.

There are at least 13 statues to Leopold II in Belgium, according to one crowd-sourced map, and numerous parks, squares and street names.

On Friday the younger brother of Belgium’s King Philippe, Prince Laurent, defended his ancestor saying Leopold II was not responsible for atrocities in the colony “because he never went to Congo”.

But in the chaos of the early 20th Century when World War One threatened to destroy Belgium, Leopold II’s nephew King Albert I erected statues to remember the successes of years gone by.

Statues of Leopold II should now be housed in museums to teach Belgian history, suggests Mireille-Tsheusi Robert, director of anti-racism NGO Bamko Cran.

White Woman Who Called Police On Black Bird-Watcher In Central Park Has Been Fired

A black man says he asked a white woman in Central Park to put her dog on a leash.

The man who shot the video of the encounter, Christian Cooper, told NPR Tuesday evening, what the woman did was \"pretty crappy without a doubt.\"

According to Christian Cooper, he started recording after asking the woman to leash her dog.

That is where the video that runs roughly 70 seconds ends, with Amy Cooper putting the leash on her dog and Christian Cooper saying \"Thank You.\"

Amy Cooper's dog has been \"voluntarily surrendered,\" according to statement posted on Facebook by the Abandoned Angels Cocker Spaniel Rescue Inc.
