PoS public hopeful about Scotland - Trinidad and Tobago Newsday

ON July 25, the Prime Minister announced that the MP for Port of Spain South Keith Scotland would become a minister in the National Security Ministry specifically focusing on police issues, and will work alongside the substantive minister, Fitzgerald Hinds. The latter remains the minister despite calls for his resignation.

Dr Rowley made the announcement during a post-Cabinet media briefing at Whitehall, Port of Spain, on July 25.

He said Scotland would be responsible for policing, offender management, illegal immigrants, drug trafficking and drug enforcement, and money-laundering. Newsday took to the streets of Port of Spain on July 25 and spoke to members of the public.

Hollis Edwards, a taxi driver from Cocorite, St James, expressed hope and confidence in Scotland’s ability to fight crime.

“He’s an educated fellow, give him a chance. Crime is the biggest problem facing TT.

“Hinds isn’t doing anything, I am hopeful Scotland will make a difference.”

The owner of KJ Clothing Store on Frederick Street, who did not wish to give his name, believes Scotland’s background as a lawyer gives him an advantage. He echoed Edward and was also hopeful.

“Crime is affecting us. I think he will be looking at issues from a different perspective, which may help reduce crime.”

Dennis Duncan of Maloney welcomed the appointment, also describing it as “hopeful.”

He hopes Hinds and Scotland will work more closely with senior superintendents in the police service, as they play an important role in the fight against crime.

Duncan stressed that the National Security Minister was doing his best, saying, “It’s a hard job he has.

“Hinds come from the bottom, he was a police officer who made it all the way to the top. So I don’t know how anyone could say he is not doing a good job.”

La Shauna Yatali, owner of Caribbean Artisan, said only God could help TT in its fight against crime.

“I respect the PM for appointing him. If help is needed in the National Security Ministry, recognising that and putting measures in place to help is commendable.”

In June, Scotland was awarded senior counsel or “silk” status.
