Nationwide protests have taken place since October 7 despite the disbanding of the controversial Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) police unit.

The demonstrators have been accused of attacking police stations and personnel.

The rallies which are mostly attended by young people have become avenues to vent against corruption and unemployment.

Rights groups say at least 15 people have been killed the demonstrations began in early October.

To some, they're a flying nuisance but pigeons are a big business in Senegal.

From his roof in a suburb of the capital Dakar, shopkeeper and pigeon racer Moustapha Gueye releases dozens of birds from the loft, who quickly fly out of sight.

\"Here it's a factory, I'm creating athletes,\" he says.

He takes care of his winged friends every morning by training them and developing crossbreeds suitable for flying in hot weather.

\"It is a sport created by Europeans, it was imported here. We discovered pigeon racing through the internet. But before we use to be pigeon breeders only,\" Gueye says.

Though more popular across the continent, it is a growing sport in the West African country.

Today, there are some 350 pigeon racing enthusiasts in Senegal, who spend a lot of money. A pigeon can cost over 800 US dollars in the country.

\"Currently I'm doing business with pigeons. I've earned several million CFA francs selling pigeons, I even bought a car through those pigeons,\" he says.

\"But the most important thing for me is the passion.

\"It's exciting to have pigeons, when you start participating in races, releasing a pigeon 400 km from its loft and it comes back, that's something you can't explain, it's great!\"

Taking flight

Pigeon racing has clearly taken flight in Senegal and continues to spread its wings.

Senegalese pigeon-racing enthusiasts are keen to turn others on to the sport, and some hope to ultimately turn professional.

But breeder and pigeon racer Oumar Johnson says some people take their dedication too far.

\"When you're too busy with pigeons, things risk going badly,\" he says, adding that the pigeon-fanciers' federation is considering less time-consuming races for youngsters.

Young people are nonetheless the future of the sport, Johnson says, adding that their devotion will make Senegal \"one of the greatest pigeon-racing nations\" one day.

\"In Europe, you have to motivate young people to get involved,\" he says.

\"Here, young people are rushing into it.\"

Two editors from Black Press of America newspapers on the frontlines of the uprising in Minneapolis in the aftermath of the murder of George Floyd by four police officers, joined a National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) livestream broadcast on Saturday, May 30, to discuss up-to-the-minute breaking news from the Twin Cities.

Al McFarlane, the editor of Insight News and Mel Reeves, editor of the Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder, spoke of the outrage over the death of Floyd and the future of ex-police officer Derek Chauvin, who was arrested and charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter.

“The murder of George Floyd at the hands of the Minneapolis Police Department on the evening of Memorial Day — this man was apprehended by police accused of forgery,” he voiced.

He added that many believe undercover police officers and non-African Americans have instigated and ignited riots and fires, which have been blamed on Black people during the uprising.

“People need to be cautious in their criticism, and the truth is it wasn’t they, the young people identified undercover police officers and people who were not Black initiated the burning and breaking of windows,” Reeves continued.

Ryan Destiny, who is best known for her role as Alexandra Crane on the now-canceled Fox television show “Star,” recently sent a message to young Black women in Hollywood.

On Thursday, June 4, Destiny posted a lengthy message on Instagram to encourage young people to speak out against discrimination in the workplace.

Reflecting on a time when she was mistreated on set, she wrote: “This message is to my fellow black sisters in particular… This goes for any career or work space but I’m speaking from my own experience.”

“If you are just now entering Hollywood in any form or plan to… and at some point experience discrimination, appropriation, racism, colorism, microaggression even if sometimes sadly by your own people…speak up for yourself.

Destiny revealed on Twitter that “Glee” star Amber Patrice Riley inspired her to tell her story.

The former “Love and Hip Hop: Hollywood” star released her song “Cappin” last week and premiered the music video on Wednesday, June 17, on World Star Hip Hop.

Kalysha’s video appeared to be inspired by the 1995 classic film “Friday.”

Although the compliments continued to come in, there were a few fans who disliked the video and song.

Yolanda Adams appeared on the debut of OWN‘s new talk show “Girlfriends Check In” on Saturday and spilled the beans on one of her celebrity crushes.

The Gospel artist revealed it was none other than Busta Rhymes.

Fellow gospel singers Erica Campbell of Mary Mary, Tasha Cobbs Leonard and Tamela Mann appeared alongside Adams virtually on the show’s first episode and the topic of celebrity crushes came up.

Submitted Oct. 12, 1927.

Decided Nov. 21, 1927.

Mr. Chief Justice Taft delivered the opinion of the Court.

This was a petition for mandamus filed in the state circuit court of Mississippi for the First judicial district of Bolivar County.

Gong Lum is a resident of Mississippi, resides in the Rosedale consolidated high school district, and is the father of Martha Lum. He is engaged in the mercantile business. Neither he nor she was connected with the consular service, or any other service, of the government of China, or any other government, at the time of her birth. She was nine years old when the petition was filed, having been born January 21, 1915, and she sued by her next friend, Chew How, who is a native-born citizen of the United States and the state of Mississippi. The petition alleged that she was of good moral character, between the ages of 5 and 21 years, and that, as she was such a citizen and an educable child, it became her fathers duty under the law to send her to school; that she desired to attend the Rosedale consolidated high school; that at the opening of the school she appeared as a pupil, but at the noon recess she was notified by the superintendent that she would not be allowed to return to the school; that an order had been issued by the board of trustees, who are made defendants, excluding her from attending the school solely on the ground that she was of Chinese descent, and not a member of the white or Caucasian race, and that their order had been made in pursuance to instructions from the state superintendent of education of Mississippi, who is also made a defendant.

The petitioners further show that there is no school maintained in the district for the education of children of Chinese descent, and none established in Bolivar County where she could attend.

The Constitution of Mississippi (Const. 1890, 201, 206) requires that there shall be a county common school fund, made up of poll taxes from the various counties, to be retained in the counties where the same is collected, and a

Back when I watched the NFL — before the league blackballed Colin Kaepernick for peacefully kneeling during the national anthem to raise awareness about the Black people killed by police brutality around the country — I was a diehard New Orleans Saints fan.

Which is why it was a stab in the gut for him to not understand why Black people would see the American flag as less than the symbol of hope Brees wants us to see.

As the country recoils in horror at images of burning buildings and projectiles tossed across American cities in anger, Black America is reminding everyone that they didn’t accept peaceful protests, either.

While some in the world are coming around to understanding why Black people are angry, Drew Brees is sticking to the covering that makes him feel righteous in his indignation: the American flag.

If Drew Brees wants to be the hero he thinks he is, he needs to disentangle himself from his love of preserving white ideals and truly stand with Black people.

These interracial stories are part of a broader mainstreaming of Black women’s beauty and cultural women are romantically involved with white men in works as varied as Broadway’s “Slave Play” and “American Son”; the movie “Sonic the Hedgehog”; the lighthearted sitcoms “Bob Hearts Abishola” and “Mixed-ish”; the legal thriller “How to Get Away With Murder”; and the Netflix reality show “Love Is Blind.”

“Sonic the Hedgehog” and“Bob Hearts Abishola” do not strongly center on race, choosing to let the mere pairing of a Black woman and a white man do its symbolic work.

When I was growing up, Tom and Helen Willis on “The Jeffersons” were my onscreen introduction to an interracial couple with a Black woman and a white man.

After noting that historically, the mere hint of the inverse–a Black man with a white woman–could once lead to his lynching, Washington said, “I do think the ways that we are thinking about interracial relationships now, it’s about two consenting individuals’ choosing.”

On the Netflix reality show “Love Is Blind,” a new couple–Lauren, who is Black, and Cameron, who is white–wrestle with this racial history right before our eyes as they move from 10 days of speed-dating–in which they never see each other–to engagement and a wedding ceremony.

Fugitive slave catchers were people who returned escaped slaves to their owners in the United States in the mid 19th century. Slaves who managed to free themselves from their owners had yet another worry: fugitive slave catchers. The Compromise of 1850 and the Fugitive Slave Law, the latter enacted pursuant to a specific provision contained in Article IV of the United States Constitution, created the Fugitive Slave.

At the time of Fugitive Slave catchers the North was moving more in the direction of abolition. The South[citation needed] wanted runaway slaves caught and brought back to their owners and they activated this by means of Fugitive Slave catchers. The Fugitive Slave Law stated that every citizen was responsible for helping to recover and return fugitive slaves; so any white person from the North or South could be, and was expected to be,[citation needed] a fugitive slave catcher. (See also Indiana in Slavery).[1]

The Northern states, however began giving more freedom and rights to black people; as a result many slaves from the South fled north where they thought they could live with more opportunity for freedom. It was possible for them to be citizens in the North, and not live as slaves.

White abolitionists from the North and anyone else aiding in freeing or hiding of slaves were punished for their efforts. One account of drastic fugitive slave catching was approximately 200 U.S. Marines escorting one fugitive slave back into the custody of his owner.[citation needed] As laws even in the North punished both the people who helped slaves escape as well as the fugitive slaves, many fled to Canada where slavery was illegal.

With the North becoming increasingly opposed to the idea of fugitive slave catchers they adopted anti-southern views. Several northern states passed new personal liberty laws in defiance of the Souths efforts to have slaves captured and returned. If the slave catcher fell in love with the slave, the slave and the slave catcher would run off together and make their own lives.

Slaves who managed to free themselves from their owners had yet another worry: fugitive slave catchers. The Compromise of 1850 and the Fugitive Slave Law, the latter enacted pursuant to a specific provision contained in Article IV of the United States Constitution, created the Fugitive Slave.\nAt the time of Fugitive Slave catchers the North was moving more in the direction of abolition. (See also Indiana in Slavery).[1] \nThe Northern states, however began giving more freedom and rights to black people; as a result many slaves from the South fled north where they thought they could live with more opportunity for freedom. It was possible for them to be citizens in the North, and not live as slaves.\nWhite abolitionists from the North and anyone else aiding in freeing or hiding of slaves were punished for their efforts. One account of drastic fugitive slave catching was approximately 200 U.S. Marines escorting one fugitive slave back into the custody of his owner.[citation needed] As laws even in the North punished both the people who helped slaves escape as well as the fugitive slaves, many fled to Canada where slavery was illegal.\nWith the North becoming increasingly opposed to the idea of fugitive slave catchers they adopted anti-southern views. Several northern states passed new personal liberty laws in defiance of the Souths efforts to have slaves captured and returned. Worried about the economy amidst COVID-19, young people in Seychelles say they want to see the island nation diversify away from its reliance on tourism and grow the island nation's ICT sector and agriculture production to lower its reliance on imports.

SNA spoke to several young people to get their point of view on how COVID-19 has impacted Seychelles, what changes they would like to see as well as opportunities presented.

Echoing the need to diversify the economy, Jade Jules told SNA that though the country is small, Seychelles has a lot of potential.

Angelique Popounneau, another young Seychellois, told SNA that COVID-19 has provided the country with an opportunity to test the 'working from home' concept which most organisations or people were not employing before the pandemic.

Popounneau, who is chief executive of the Seychelles Conservation and Climate Adaptation Trust (SeyCCAT), added that whether people will see the working from home concept continue into the future, depends on the willingness of the organisations to create work environments that work for their workers.

THE NEW ORLEANS TRIBUNE - “Establishing this office is part of our commitment to a holistic long-term strategy to prevent gun violence over time. This work started with recommendations from our Forward Together Transition Team, and in one of my first acts as Mayor, I established the Gun Violence Reduction Taskforce. This in turn led to the August 2019 Generational Gun Violence Reduction Plan. This new office will coordinate, fund and evaluate public health gun violence reduction interventions and their outcomes,” said Mayor Cantrell.

Lori Harvey is showering her stepfather Steve Harvey with love!

The “Family Feud” game show host and Lori’s mother Marjorie Harvey tied the knot in 2007; they have a blended family of seven children.

Marjorie had been married before and has three children of her own in 33-year-old Morgan Harvey, 29-year-old Jason Harvey, and Lori.

Riley B. King, better known by his stage name “B.B. King” is a famous African American blues musician. He was born on September 16, 1925 on a cotton plantation in Mississippi, to Albert King and Nora Ella Farr. His father left the family when King was very young, and his mother remarried shortly after, so he was raised by his maternal grandmother. He joined the church choir at a young age, and bought his first guitar at the age of 12. He was influenced musically by the famous blues musician Bukka White, who was his mother’s cousin. In 1946, he followed White to Tennessee, and began playing small time gigs where he eventually made a name for himself in musical circles. He earned a spot on the Memphis radio station WDIA, which became so popular that it became a full-fledged show called “The Sepia Swing Club”.

King began recording in 1949, with a Los Angeles based label called RPM Records. He assembled his own band and began touring major cities such as Washington, D.C., Chicago, Los Angeles, Detroit, St. Louis and the southern U.S. states. During one of his performances, a fight broke out which caused a kerosene filled barrel to catch fire and be knocked down. Soon, the entire theatre caught fire and the building was evacuated. During this time, King realized that he had left his guitar inside the burning building, and went back to retrieve it, narrowly escaping death. The fight was about a woman named Lucille, and King named his guitar Lucille to remind him of the experience and vowed never to do anything so dangerous again.

In 1952, King had a number one hit on the chart called “3 O’ Clock Blues” which made him a prominent musician. This was followed by many others, including “You Know I Love You” “Woke Up This Morning”, “When My Heart Beats like a Hammer”, “Whole Lotta Love” “You Upset Me Baby”, “Every Day I Have the Blues”, “Ten Long Years”, “Sweet Little Angel”, “On My Word of Honor” and “Please Accept My Love.” In 1956 alone, he had 342 concerts, and formed his own record label called “Blues Boys Kingdom”.

\t\tThe Wailers have collaborated with the late Bob Marley’s daughter and grandson, as well as Jamaican star Shaggy, for their latest single.

Marley’s daughter Cedella Marley, 52, and his 23-year-old grandson Skip Marley feature on the track, which from the start appears to be reminiscent of The Wailers’ 1977 hit One Love.

Puerto Rican singer-songwriter Farruko also features on the single to help “create a sound that effortlessly fuses reggae with Latin music”.

“Who would have thought that we would be living this current situation and that the message of ‘One World, One Prayer’ would resonate so strongly?”

The legendary band – who toured with Marley between 1972 and 1981 – say One World, One Prayer is a “powerful song focused on unity, love and inclusion beyond cultural differences”.

Krystal Lee, the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) caretaker for St Ann North West, has given low performance ratings for Member of Parliament Dayton Campbell, questioning his achievements during his nine-year tenure.

Campbell told The Gleaner last week that one of his biggest achievements as member of parliament was his programme of skills training, which he claimed has certified 3,614 people.

“When it comes on to a lot of skills training, where you can actually go into the communities and have these centres using whether school or churches ... when I actually go around, there are actually none.

She pointed to the Salem community in the constituency as one area where, she claimed, young people had not been the recipIents of training initiatives.

Lee said her focus was on rural infrastructural development, including roads and water systems, job creation, education, and skills training.
