THE EDITOR: Permit me space in your paper to send an open letter to the Commissioner of the Board of Inland Revenue (BIR).
Dear commissioner,
I am 81 years old and unemployed.
Through the generosity of my grandfather, I was able to survive my university courses, on a weekly stipend of $5, many decades ago.
On graduating, I was able to purchase the above-mentioned property and built a home. This is a house I have occupied for the past 44 years and which was never rented.
I am now being asked to pay property tax based on a rental value – a rent I have never received.
In such circumstances, I am unable to pay the taxes being imposed upon me by way of your letter dated June 24, 2024.
Please be so advised.
Your humble citizen,
IQUBAL HYDAL
Felicity
