The African Union (AU) on Wednesday said its specialised health institution, the Africa CDC, is closely monitoring the situation while preparing to support responses to the new outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Following a notification by the Equateur provincial health authorities of community deaths on May 23 and 30, the DRC government on Sunday declared a new outbreak of EVD in Mbandaka in the northwest Equateur Province.

As the DRC Ministry of Health is currently establishing a coordination and response mechanism to effectively contain the outbreak, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) is closely monitoring the situation while preparing to support response to the outbreak at the national and regional levels.

It also said that the Africa CDC would redeploy its resources and team of experts supporting response to the 10th EVD outbreak in North Kivu to support response to the new outbreak in Equateur Province.

Cognizant of the risk that multiple disease outbreaks have on the DRC, the Africa CDC is working with the DRC government, the World Health Organization (WHO) and other partners to strengthen response to both the 10th and 11th EVD outbreaks and the Covid-19 pandemic in the country.

LONDON, United Kingdom (AFP) — The central English city of Leicester could be the country's first to face a local lockdown due to a rise in coronavirus cases, the UK's Home Secretary Priti Patel said Sunday.

Reports in the Sunday Times newspaper said the Government was set to reimpose strict lockdown rules on Leicester “within the next few days”.

Boris Johnson's Government is set to ease lockdown restrictions from July 4 — despite fears of a second wave of infections— by opening pubs, restaurants and hairdressers among others across England.

“I think nothing would be more damaging for our country, for our economy if we do have a second wave,” Patel said.

Mbanza Kongo — The provincial governor of northern Zaire province, Pedro Makita Armando Júlia, Thursday in Mbanza Kongo reinforced the appeal to the population for the obligatory fulfillment of the home or institutional quarantine, to avoid the spread of covid-19 throughout the national territory.

According to the governor, who was speaking to the press, beyond the northern border that the region shares with the DRC, greater attention should also be paid to the southern border, which delimits Zaire with the province of Bengo, in order to prevent the violation of the sanitary cordon by citizens from the country's capital, Luanda.

He recalled that the best weapon for the fight against this invisible enemy is still prevention and regretted the lack of mass testing capacity in the region that would allow the prevalence or not of the virus among the local population.

The province of Zaire, together with the other 16 regions of the country, except for Luanda and Kwanza Norte, has so far had no confirmed positive case of covid-19.

The region shares a 310-km border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, which already has hundreds of positive cases.

The Western Cape government says Tygerberg Hospital's ICU Covid-19 department reaching its capacity should not be seen in isolation from the rest of the province's ability to accommodate Covid-19 patients.

\"The department notes the recent media report stating that Tygerberg Hospital's [intensive care unit] is full,\" it said in a statement after News24 reported the 25 beds set aside for Covid-19 patients were fully occupied as of Tuesday.

\"We would like to advise that the hospital should not be seen in isolation from the provincial plan in managing the Covid-19 pandemic.

The department said while Tygerberg, as of Thursday, had 23 patients in its ICU, in the broader province, it had 2 162 general care beds and 150 ICU beds in central and regional hospitals.

- The Cape Town International Convention Centre will be turned into a temporary hospital facility with 850 general care additional beds at the peak of the pandemic for mild cases.
