A November 26 letter from the presidency asked the head of Uganda's national drug authority to 'work out a mechanism' to clear the importation of the vaccines.

China has about five COVID-19 vaccine candidates at different levels of trials. It was not clear what vaccine was being imported into Uganda.

One of the frontrunners is the Sinopharm vaccine developed by the Beijing Institute of Biological Product, a unit of Sinopharm’s China National Biotec Group (CNBG).

On Wednesday, the United Arab Emirates said the vaccine has 86% efficacy, citing an interim analysis of late-stage clinical trials.

China has used the drug to vaccinate up to a million people under its emergency use program.

On Tuesday, Morocco said it was ordering up to 10 million doses of the vaccine.

Record cases

Uganda on Monday registered 701 new COVID-19 cases, the highest-ever daily increase, bringing its national count to 23,200.

The new cases were out of the 5,578 samples tested for the novel coronavirus over the past 24 hours, the country's health ministry said in a statement.

Tuesday's tally was 606, the second-highest ever number of new infections, bringing the cumulative number of confirmed cases in the east African country to 23,860.

Health authorities have blamed ongoing election campaigns which have drawn huge crowds for the rise in infections.

Governor JB Pritzker on Monday announced the launch of Illinois’ statewide contact tracing program for COVID-19 cases in two pilot counties as the state begins to fine-tune its latest weapon to fight the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Contact tracing, which was used early on in the state’s coronavirus outbreak when the number of cases was manageably small, consists of tracers interviewing people who have newly tested positive about who they had significant contact with in the past 48 hours.

The two counties were chosen “for having significant needs in terms of case numbers in vulnerable populations, a capacity to grow their contact tracing and great existing collaborations of public health personnel, medical students and volunteers already on the ground,” Pritzker said.

The governor said Illinois’ contact tracing program will consist of three parts: a disease reporting software, a common management platform and an app to be used by coronavirus patients and the people they came in contact with.

People interested in becoming part of the contact tracing program, including becoming a tracer, should visit IDPH’s on Monday reported 2,294 new cases of COVID-19, as well as 59 new deaths.

South Sudan has registered 54 new Covid-19 cases, bringing the total number of confirmed infections to 290, the country's Health ministry has said.

Speaking to The EastAfrican on Sunday in Juba, Health ministry spokesman Dr Loi Thuoi said some of the new cases were contacts of people who had already tested positive for the coronavirus disease, others were people who sought help after experiencing symptoms, while a third group were people who were tested as they wanted to travel outside the country.

Last Friday, President Salva Kiir dissolved the High-Level Taskforce on coronavirus pandemic and reconstituted a new one, following complaints from citizens and activists that the committee was full of politicians and makes non-scientific decisions.

The new taskforce is led by Vice President in charge of the Service Cluster, Hussein Abdelbagi, and has a number of undersecretaries, the health minister, and a member of the doctors’ union.

Last week, some South Sudanese criticised President Kiir for easing Covid-19 restrictions, warning that the country may experience a full-blown pandemic.

Botswana’s director of health services, Dr Malaki Tshipayagae, announced Friday that the capital, Gaborone, will return to extreme lockdown after eight new COVID-19 cases at a private hospital.

A further four imported cases were reported Friday, bringing the country’s COVID-19 tally to 60.

Tshipayagae said the army and police would resume patrols, effective Friday midnight.

(Barbados Nation) After 17 days with no new COVID-19 cases, four people who returned to Barbados on Tuesday’s repatriation flight from the United States tested positive for the viral illness.

Minister of Health Jeffrey Bostic made the announcement earlier yesterday during a media briefing at his Culloden Road, St Michael, office.

The public health officers in this Ministry are fully aware and have been advising the Government that we should be prepared for an uptick in cases once travel from hotbed areas resumed,” Bostic said.

“I wish to assure the public that Barbados is much better prepared today to deal with this challenge than we were in March when the viral illness surfaced here on island.

Bostic said the Best-Dos Santos Public Health laboratory conducted 187 tests on Tuesday and the others were negative.

Health Cabinet Secretary (CS) Mutahi Kagwe Monday appealed for equitable access to Covid-19 tools as the government moves to set up laboratories at border points.

During the daily press briefing on Monday, Health Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) Rashid Aman said the government is planning to set up Covid-19 laboratories at border points to bolster testing capacity and reduce tests turnaround time.

The CAS said the government will expand the testing process to include restaurants, border points and communities as well as other high risk areas.

He added: “The problem we may have is along the Tanzania border whether it is Isebania, Namanga or Taita Taveta because we do not have a functional laboratory yet, that can do the tests in those places,” he added.

Dr Aman said the turnaround time at the border will be reduced to at least 24 hours once the laboratory is commissioned.

In Allegheny County, health officials announced seven new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, a single hospitalization and three additional deaths.

For Pennsylvania, the Department of Health on Wednesday confirmed 410 additional COVID-19 cases and 48 deaths, bringing the statewide infection total to 76,846 and 6,062 fatalities.

Of the state’s COVID-related deaths, 4,199 were residents in these facilities.

On the heels of the Republican-controlled General Assembly’s passage of a resolution Tuesday to end the state’s emergency declaration, Gov. Tom Wolf’s administration vowed Wednesday to fight the resolution in court.

EDITORIAL: Kebs move welcome

Tuesday, May 19, 2020 0:01

By EDITORIAL

Kebs has banned eight sanitiser brands on the back of a rise in new Covid-19 cases.

Profiteers and counterfeiters have since seen an opportunity to make a kill with substandard goods, exposing the public to the risk of not only contracting the viral disease but to other public health and safety risks associated with poor quality products.

That is why the move by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (Kebs), which has issued the specifications that such products must meet is critical and must be stringently enforced.

On Sunday, we reported that the Kebs banned another eight brands on the back of a rise in new Covid-19 cases.

The regulator and other enforcement agencies must now move from banning hazardous products and starting charging those implicated in their manufacture and sale.

Four new COVID-19 cases have been registered in Uganda.

According to Dr Henry Mwebesa, the director general of health services, the new case brings the total confirmed cases in Uganda to 264.

Dr Mwebesa said in a Wednesday statement that two cases are among truck drivers while the other two are contacts to previously confirmed truck drivers.

The US recorded a one-day total of 34,700 new COVID-19 cases, just short of the nation's late-April peak of 36,400, according to the count kept by Johns Hopkins University.

While new cases have been declining steadily in early US hot spots such as New York and New Jersey, several other states set single-day case records this week, including Arizona, California, Mississippi, Nevada and Texas.

Florida's single-day count of new confirmed cases surged yesterday to 5,500, a 25 per cent jump from the record set last week and triple the level from just two weeks ago.

In Arizona, cases will probably exceed statewide hospital bed capacity within the next several weeks if the trend continues, said Dr Joseph Gerald, a University of Arizona public health policy professor.

In a sign of the shift in the outbreak, New York, Connecticut and New Jersey announced they will require visitors from states with high coronavirus infection rates to quarantine themselves for 14 days.

The Ministry of Health says that the postponement of resuming inter-provincial movements and passenger taxi-moto services was triggered by five new Covid-19 cases confirmed in Rusizi district, Western Province on Sunday, May 31.

Explaining the change in an interview on Radio Rwanda on Monday, June 1, Minister of Health Dr Daniel Ngamije said that the change resulted from five new cases confirmed from residents of Rusizi district.

He said: \"We did an assessment and found that the recent new Covid-19 cases include five citizens from Rusizi district.

According to Ngamije, these five new Covid-19 cases include traders, truck-drivers and a motorcyclist who transported goods.

So far, according to the Ministry of Health, Rusizi is the only district where community cases were confirmed recently.
