Director of the Africa Centre for Disease Control, Dr John Nkengasong, says while numbers have not increased significantly, Africa's strategy is still to massively ramp up testing, tracking and tracing.
Dr John Nkengasong, director of the Africa Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), had in recent weeks expressed concern that the coronavirus spread had accelerated by as much as 43% week-to-week.
But on Thursday he said the number of new cases registered across Africa over the last week - 21,677 - had been about the same as the number of new cases the week before - 20,771.
Nkengasong reported that Africa now had an accumulated total of 98,829 infections, 3,031 deaths and 38,334 recoveries as at 9am that day.
South Africa still had the highest number of infections at 18,003 followed by Egypt with 14,229; Algeria, 7,542, Morocco 7,133 and Nigeria 6,677.
