Fam courts Silver Strikers, Mighty Wanderers on Caf tourneys

Football Association of Malawi (Fam) has started the process of registering Silver Strikers and Mighty Wanderers for the 2025 Confederation of African (Caf) inter-club competitions.

Fam Club Licencing Manager Clement Kafwafwa confirmed Tuesday that the association engaged the two clubs after Caf informed them to start the process.

“We have started the process and everything is going on very well. We have submitted all the documents to the two clubs,” Kafwafwa said.

Silver have expressed interest to participate in the 2025 Caf Champions League after winning the TNM Super League last season-their first title in 11 years.

Wanderers qualified for the Caf Confederation Cup after winning the Ibongetse Castel Challenge Cup.

Caf rules and regulations state that all clubs willing to participate in the Caf Inter-club competition must go through the Caf licencing process.

The clubs must meet all the minimum Caf requirements namely sporting, infrastructure, administrative and personnel, legal and financial.

Kafwafwa said both Silver and Wanderers have until Friday next week to submit all the documents to the First Instant Body for its determination.

“We expect both clubs to expedite the process. So far, we are happy that they are responding well,” he said.

Should the two clubs decide against taking part in the competitions, the other 14 clubs will be given a chance to participate in the tournaments.

Silver Chief Executive Officer Patrick Chimimba was not readily available for his comment yesterday.

The Central Bankers last participated in the Caf Confederation Cup in 2018 but they were eliminated in the first preliminary round following a 4-3 loss on post-match penalties to Ambere SC from Gabon.

On his part, Wanderers Chief Executive Officer Panganeni Ndovi confirmed receipt of the documents from Fam on the matter.

“We are to make submissions towards club licencing under Caf. We are reviewing the requirements and we will make our determination within this week,” Ndovi said.

Wanderers will make a return to the competition after they lost 6-1 on aggregate to AS Vita of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in 2018.

For the past five years, FCB Nyasa Big Bullets, had been Malawi’s only representative in the Caf Champions League.

Last year, Bullets exited the competition following a 3-2 loss on aggregate to Zambia’s Red Arrows.
