Walker among Trinidad and Tobago swimmers for Caribbean Games - Trinidad and Tobago Newsday

TWO TOBAGONIANS were selected on the national swimming contingent, to represent Trinidad and Tobago at the inaugural Caribbean Games, scheduled for Guadeloupe from June 29 to July 3.

Following ratification of the team by the TT Olympic Committee and Aquatics Sports of TT on June 17, Mosi Denoon was appointed as coach and manager of the team, while Onella Walker was one of five swimmers selected for the trip.

Denoon, who has been the coach of the TT team on three previous occasions, is looking forward to another exciting tour.

He said, “I am very excited, I have a strong set of swimmers, and I am expecting great things.

“I have managed most of the swimmers before, the only new addition is Mark Anthony Beckles, so I am looking forward to podium spots.”

Walker was in good form at the recently-held Pan American Age Group Swimming Championships, at the National Aquatic Centre in Couva, where she bagged three gold and two silver medals, and established a new national record in the 100 metres backstroke.

While elated to once again represent TT, she had her challenges during her preparation phase.

She said, “Preparation for the Games has been a little bit difficult with getting to the pool and back home, but I do with what I am given. With the challenges however, I do expect to lower my times, as my results in the Pan Am age groups were pleasing, and better can be done.”

Walker will hit the pool in three individual events 50 metres, 100 metres and 200 metres backstrokes, along with two mixed relays.

Trinidad and Tobago will feature among 29 countries for the championships, which will take place at the Inter-municipal Pool in Abymes.

The full TT swimming team, which are expected to touch down in Guadelope on June 28, are coach/manager Mosi Denoon of Tobago YMCA Warriors, Aqeel Joseph (Sea Horse Aquatics), Nikoli Blackman (Marlins Swim Club), Jahmia Harley (Tidal Wave Aquatics), Mark-Anthony Beckles (Flying Fish Swim Club) and Walker (Tobago YMCA).
