While watching the action/adventure film Uncharted at his home with relatives on Tuesday night, Couva resident Malik "Merl" Harper, 24, got up and walked outside.
His last words were: "I’m coming back."
Minutes later, shortly before 7 pm, residents of Aneisa Street in Point Lisas heard gunshots and called the police.
Harper, who lived across the road from where the shooting happened, and John Outram, 31, of Mary Street, also in Couva, were found with gunshot wounds on the ground in the yard of a garage where a group of men were liming.
Harper and Outram were taken to the Couva Health Facility where they later died while undergoing treatment.
"He was eating and watching the movie and went outside,” his sister Shanyka Sennon told Newsday on Wednesday.
“Maybe he stopped to hail out someone. He had promised to buy KFC on his return. He was a joyous person who was not involved in any crime. He was at the wrong place at the wrong time. I do not know if he even knew the other guy (Outram)."
She said their mother Natalie Harper, the equipment manager of the women national football team, is in the Dominican Republic.
"She left with the team a few days ago. She is devastated. We (relatives) did not see this coming."
Police believe the target was Outram. Newsday was unable to find his relatives.
There were also unconfirmed reports that two other people were grazed by a bullet and got minor injuries.
No one has been arrested.
Central Division and Homicide Bureau Region III police are investigating.

Two men died at hospital on Tuesday night, shortly after a shooting in Point Lisas in Couva.
The police identified the victims as Malick Harper of Aneisa Street and John Outram, of Mary Street, both in Couva.
Residents of Aneisa Street heard gunshots at around 6.30 pm and called the police.
The two were shot in a yard.
Both were taken to the Couva Health Facility, where they later died while undergoing treatment.
No one has been arrested.
Central Division and Homicide Bureau Region III police are investigating.
