Record cases
Uganda on Monday registered 701 new COVID-19 cases, the highest-ever daily increase, bringing its national count to 23,200.
The new cases were out of the 5,578 samples tested for the novel coronavirus over the past 24 hours, the country's health ministry said in a statement.
Tuesday's tally was 606, the second-highest ever number of new infections, bringing the cumulative number of confirmed cases in the east African country to 23,860.
Health authorities have blamed ongoing election campaigns which have drawn huge crowds for the rise in infections.

Jones was referring to Amy Cooper, a white woman who called the police on a black man in New York’s Central Park on Monday after he asked that she put her dog on a leash.
Film of the exchange and subsequent call to police went viral, with Cooper repeatedly referring to the man's race while falsely saying she was being threatened.

The Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) is an African-American civil rights organization in the United States that played a pivotal role for African Americans in the Civil Rights Movement. Founded in 1942, its stated mission is to bring about equality for all people regardless of race, creed, sex, age, disability, sexual orientation, religion or ethnic background.[2]
COREs national chairman was Roy Innis.
CORE was founded in Chicago in March 1942. Among the founding members were James L. Farmer, Jr., George Houser, James R. Robinson, Samuel E. Riley, Bernice Fisher, Homer Jack, and Joe Guinn. Of the 50 original members 28 were men and 22 were women, roughly one-third of them were black and two-thirds white.[3] Bayard Rustin, while not a father of the organization, was, as Farmer and House later said, an uncle to CORE and supported it greatly. The group had evolved out of the pacifist Fellowship of Reconciliation, and sought to apply the principles of nonviolence as a tactic against segregation.[4] The groups inspiration was Mahatma Gandhis teachings of non-violence resistance.[5] Krishnalal Shridharani, a popular writer and journalist as well as a vibrant and theatrical speaker, had been a protege of Gandhi and had been jailed in the Salt March whose book War Without Violence influenced the organisation.[6] Gandhi had, in turn, been influenced by the writings of Henry David Thoreau, the American author, poet, and philosopher. At the time of COREs founding Gandhi was still engaged in non-violent resistance against British rule in India; CORE believed that nonviolent civil disobedience could also be used by African-Americans to challenge racial segregation in the United States.[7]
In accordance with COREs constitution and bylaws, in the early and mid-1960s, chapters were organized on a model similar to that of a democratic trade union, with monthly membership meetings, elected and usually unpaid officers, and numerous committees of volunteers. A comprehensive trade deal between the No. 1 economy in the world and the No. 67 economy in the world could potentially spur economic growth and improve living standards in Kenya but, from every indication, is fraught with major problems, perils, and pitfalls for Kenya and regional integration efforts in Africa.
With rising food insecurity in Kenya, devastating effects of climate change, and on-going negotiations of Phase II of the African Continental Free Trade Area agreement (AfCFTA) this is arguably the worst time for Kenya to embark on a comprehensive trade deal that guarantees duty-free market access to the largest economy in the world.
Before embarking on any trade talks, it is imperative that Nairobi carry out a meaningful scoping assessment, engage in open and broad consultation with stakeholders regarding trade priorities and objectives, and based on consultation, decide whether it makes sense to enter into trade talks with the US at this time and if so, publish its negotiation objectives.
Based on the US negotiating objectives and given the US emphasis on “regulatory compatibility” and “strong enforcement” of trade deals, a Kenya-US trade deal has the potential to impermissibly encroach on Kenya’s domestic policy space, impose a costly administrative burden on Kenya, erode hard-won World Trade Organisation (WTO) flexibilities, particularly regarding public health and impose WTO-extra and WTO-plus disciplines that Kenya is neither ready for nor able to implement.
Reimagining trade policies requires that Nairobi reject any pressure to base negotiation on US model agreements or recent FTAs that the US has concluded.

There has been uproar in our society about why, despite there being an information overload on the novel coronavirus, that most men still seem to be overlooking safety precautions by not wearing masks, not practicing social distancing and “liming” when they should be at home.
A lot of it is ingrained into the Guyanese man from very young—the importance of the clothes he wears, the way he walks and talks, the need to be hard and not show emotions, and not have anyone disrespect him.
Confirmation bias: Another significant aspect to consider as it relates to why men are more likely to ignore calls to adhere to safety precautions is the simple fact that it is easier for us to follow and listen to “information” that supports our beliefs.
Mental health: Studies conducted in the UK showed that young men aged 19 to 24 were more likely to ignore lockdown and safety advice if they were depressed.
On the other hand, men who were diagnosed with anxiety were more likely to listen to medical advice on good hygiene and social distancing.

Let me share a few “truths” that not only have many of us heard about, but many things are specific to poor people and African-Americans in this country.
For millions or Black, brown, and poor people in this country, that is not an option.
This “truth” shows that a whole lot of people are left out when the CDC and other officials tell folks who are already bunkered down, that if they think they have symptoms, “don’t go to the hospital; call your doctor first”.
Let’s start with the complexity of many households and families in most of the urban cities where the majority of the poor, Black, and brown people live.
I felt it was important to write this particular column, so that we are all clear about the specific impacts of this pandemic, and how it will disproportionately impact black, brown, and poor people in ways that others won’t be affected.
