The 2017 world champion and 2016 Olympic silver medallist, Luvo Manyonga, was ordered to pay a R2 500 admission of guilt fine or appear in court, AFP reported.

According to a police notice, Manyonga was charged under lockdown regulations for \"failure to confine himself in his place of residence and public drinking\", the reports said.

The written notice said Manyonga was allegedly caught at Thubelitsha Park in Kayamandi‚ Stellenbosch‚ on spokesperson Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana said: \"A 29-year-old man was given a notice to appear in court for contravening Disaster Management Act regulations on Wednesday.\"

According to AFP, Manyonga, who won the 2011 under-20 world championships, battled a crystal meth addiction which resulted in him being slapped with an 18-month ban from athletics in 2012.

Manyonga had his best season in 2017, pushing the South African record to 8.65m and then lifting the world crown in London.

LOS ANGELES — The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Los Angeles County topped 40,000 May 20, while results of the latest antibody testing showed a drop in the percentage of residents believed to have been infected at some point, an indication the virus’ spread is slowing.

Projected across the county’s 10 million residents, a 2.1% infection rate would equate to roughly 210,000 people — far greater than the county’s current number of confirmed cases, which just topped 40,000.

Neeraj Sood, a USC professor of public policy at the USC Price School for Public Policy and lead investigator on the antibody study, noted several changes in methodology between the two rounds of testing, most notably a greater outreach to Spanish- and Mandarin-speaking residents in the May survey, along with changes in testing sites that contributed to different demographics.

Barbara Ferrer, director of the county Department of Public Health, echoed that optimistic tone, while also acknowledging that methodology may have contributed to the drop in percentage of antibody-positive tests.

She noted that the latest testing, like the first round, found that men are more likely to be infected with the virus, as are people in lower-income neighborhoods and people under age 55.

The five years I spent working in the border town of Musina, a melting pot of cultures, in the early to mid-2000s, sometimes felt like experiencing South Africa, Zimbabwe, Malawi and Mozambique in one place.

According to Ngaka Modiri Molema in the book The Bantu past and present: An Ethnographic and historical study of the Native races of South Africa, Tabane’s ancestry can be traced back to Mokgatla, after which the Bakgatla tribe is named and is a descendant of Mohurutshe.

In the company of the then Zambian High Commissioner to South Africa, we announced our arrival by paying a courtesy visit to the mayor of Livingstone, as is customary for African folks.

The freedom of South Africa was plotted in Morogoro, Tanzania, among the many places.

It was the late Tanzanian president Mwalimu Julius Nyerere who told us that: “Unity will not make us rich, but it can make it difficult for Africa and the African peoples to be disregarded and humiliated.”

We don't talk much about her early life in Sierra Leone, when 3,956 people died during the Ebola epidemic from 2014 to 2016.

Maybe I anticipated my oldest daughter's fear amid COVID-19 because the scent of diluted bleach sometimes makes my own stomach turn.

I covered the Ebola epidemic as a journalist for The Associated Press, first in Liberia and then in Sierra Leone.

Ebola changed the course of my daughters' lives in immeasurable ways that are still unfolding.

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks surged on Wall Street to their highest levels since the business shutdowns took hold in the U.S. over two months ago, climbing on optimism Tuesday about the reopening economy even as the nation’s official death toll from the coronavirus closed in on 100,000, a number President Donald Trump once predicted the country would never see.

In a largely symbolic move, the New York Stock Exchange trading floor in Manhattan reopened for the first time in two months, with plexiglass barriers, masks and a reduced number of traders to adhere to 6-foot (2-meter) social distancing rules.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who has presided over the state with the highest death toll from the scourge, rang the bell to set off trading at the NYSE.

In hard-hit New York, Cuomo reported a one-day total Tuesday of 73 deaths, the lowest figure in months, and down from a peak of nearly 800.

Brazil has about 375,000 coronavirus infections — second only to the 1.6 million cases in the U.S. — and has counted over 23,000 deaths, but many fear Brazil’s true toll is much higher.

Governor JB Pritzker on Monday announced the launch of Illinois’ statewide contact tracing program for COVID-19 cases in two pilot counties as the state begins to fine-tune its latest weapon to fight the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Contact tracing, which was used early on in the state’s coronavirus outbreak when the number of cases was manageably small, consists of tracers interviewing people who have newly tested positive about who they had significant contact with in the past 48 hours.

The two counties were chosen “for having significant needs in terms of case numbers in vulnerable populations, a capacity to grow their contact tracing and great existing collaborations of public health personnel, medical students and volunteers already on the ground,” Pritzker said.

The governor said Illinois’ contact tracing program will consist of three parts: a disease reporting software, a common management platform and an app to be used by coronavirus patients and the people they came in contact with.

People interested in becoming part of the contact tracing program, including becoming a tracer, should visit IDPH’s on Monday reported 2,294 new cases of COVID-19, as well as 59 new deaths.

ANC deputy secretary general Jessie Duarte has told the tobacco industry to \"back off\" after a petition started circulating online this week, calling for the \"removal\" of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.

Duarte voiced her protest against the \"odious attack on Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma by what is clearly a well-orchestrated and well-heeled tobacco industry\", in a voice message shared with News24.

In the message, she says the industry is trying to \"make sure that we are driven into a deeper crisis during a period when we are facing a health crisis that attacks people’s respiratory organs\".

'NDZ has done more for SA than tobacco industry'

\"Well, as far as I’m concerned, this woman, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, has done more for this country than the tobacco industry has or will do for any country, anywhere in the world, ever again, other than making people ill,\" Duarte says.

On Friday, News24 reported that Dlamini-Zuma had told the National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) that the sale of tobacco and alcohol should continue to be banned until the country reaches Level 1 of the lockdown.

Nations around the world have watched in horror at the five days of civil unrest in the United States following the death of a Black man being detained by police.

Burning cars and riot police in the U.S. featured on newspaper front pages around the globe May 31—bumping news of the COVID-19 pandemic to second-tier status in some places.

Germany’s top-selling Bild newspaper on Sunday carried the sensational headline “This killer-cop set America ablaze” with an arrow pointing to a photo of now-fired police officer Derek Chauvin, who has been charged with third-degree murder in Floyd’s death, with his knee on Floyd’s neck.

In Italy, the Corriere della Sera newspaper’s senior U.S. correspondent Massimo Gaggi wrote that the reaction to Floyd’s killing was “different” than previous cases of Black Americans killed by police and the ensuring violence.

In another expression of solidarity with American protesters, about 150 people marched through central Jerusalem on May 30 to protest the shooting death by Israeli police of an unarmed, autistic Palestinian man earlier in the day.

(NNPA)—Under the direction and management of President Donald Trump and his coronavirus pandemic task force, there has been mass death.

Instead of President Trump’s weekly briefing solidifying and bringing the country together to fight a common enemy, the nation is more divided and broken.

President Trump’s briefings have become a comedy show, where officials tell lies, there’s no coordinated national plan, and made up facts.

As a result of President Trump’s statements, major companies had put out statements to customers to not follow the president’s instructions or advice.

The failure is national, and our president sees the coronavirus pandemic in personal and political terms.

Swint Logistics Group hauls cabinets to New York, and gravel and asphalt to construction sites throughout metro Detroit.

Ironically, the company’s $9 million contract with the New York City Public Housing Authority put Swint and an employee in the eye of the coronavirus’ epicenter.

Meanwhile, other construction companies, such as Brinker Cos., tried to get out in front of the stay-at-home order and the reopening with preparation.

So as construction companies reopen and try to adjust to the new normal, there are indications that Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan would also like to see construction sites humming with activity.

As the reopening goes forward, people like Greg Bowens want to make sure black-owned construction companies continue to be included in development opportunities when the construction industry boom regains its pre-COVID-19 momentum.

Austria had a relatively successful first phase of the pandemic but has joined other European countries in seeing a rise in infections in recent weeks. So if you take the countries, United States, Spain, the UK, France, China — these are the countries that are the largest tourism destinations in the world, and these are also the countries that have had the highest rates of infection.

So I think moving forward, with respect to tourism, countries will be very careful even as they seek to rebuild the industry, and especially in the Caribbean where tourism is critical in terms of earning foreign exchange,” he said.

According to The UWI Mona deputy principal: “I do not foresee any immediate move towards reopening these borders unless places like the United States and the United Kingdom, Germany, et cetera — where most of our tourists come from — unless they also have the pandemic under control and they have also determined what sort of protocols have to be here if their citizens need to visit other countries.”

We don't know for sure when the borders will be reopened and when these tourists will arrive, but I suspect that what I said earlier about understanding what other countries will be doing will also help to inform our decision to go forward.

Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett last week indicated that Jamaica's tourism industry will be reopened in short order, with a date to be declared.
