The Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) has urged the Muslim community to exercise social distancing and stay at home during the upcoming Eid celebration, saying the day could become a \"super-spreading event\".
In a statement on Friday, the MJC asked the community not to gather during the moon sighting, not visit their families on Eid, and instead use technology to create \"special family moments\".
\"Eid can potentially become a super-spreading event which could result in many more people dying, especially if people disobey lockdown regulations and start visiting family.
\"Guidance for performing Eid salaah at home has already been given, however, it will lose its effect if people start visiting each other at home,\" the MJC said.

–Kwame Kilpatrick
Most Detroiters remember watching Kwame Kilpatrick speak those words hours after resigning as mayor 12 years ago.
Recent reports state that former mayor Kwame Kilpatrick is expected to be released from prison as early as June 10 after serving seven years of a 28-year sentence—a sentence that many felt was excessive.
Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick is being quarantined at a federal prison while awaiting a likely release in June, which would be 21 years before schedule.
State representative Karen Whitsett, D-Detroit also confirmed the release saying that she spoke with President Trump during Thursday’s visit to Michigan and that he said Kwame Kilpatrick would be one of 3,000 prisoners soon released.
Current Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan was asked during his Friday press briefing on the city’s COVID-19 response for his thoughts on Kilpatrick’s early release.
National Security Minister Dr Horace Chang says that like the 1,044 Jamaican crew members who returned to the island this week via the Adventure of the Seas, there are nine other cruise ships on the high seas with nationals eager to come home.
Chang was speaking at Thursday’s press conference at the Falmouth Port in Trelawny, where crew members disembarked, were tested for the new coronavirus, and were processed by immigration officials before being whisked away into quarantine at two St Ann hotels.
Royal Caribbean Cruise Line and the Jamaica Government are coordinating to see how best we can deal with the requests,” said Chang.
Chang also pooh-poohed a suggestion that returning cruise ship crew members be quarantined on their vessels because they were virtually floating hotels.
“[Quarantine arrangements] cannot change not only based on costs, but also ships would not want to be quarantine vessels,” said Chang.

Feminism in the 1960s and 1970s made a difference in the life of women in the United States, but the womens movement is often remembered as being too white. Many black feminists responded to the womens liberation movement and the cries of sisterhood with writings that critically analyzed the second wave of feminism or provided missing pieces of the puzzle. Here is a list of five important books about African-American feminism:

“We now have really clear evidence that wearing masks works — it’s probably a 50% protection against transmission,” Dr. Chris Murray, director of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, or IHME, at the University of Washington, told CNN late Tuesday.
President Donald Trump has foregone face coverings in public while his presumptive rival Joe Biden has worn one, staking their ground in the partisan debate over whether masks are a paranoid restriction or a necessary precaution.
Illinois appears to be entering a “downward trend,” with the week ending May 16 being the first with a lower number of coronavirus deaths than the week before, Illinois Public Health Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike said at a news conference.
New York, the hardest-hit state for the virus, reported Monday that 73 residents died in a single day, the lowest daily death toll since the start of the pandemic in the US, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said.
The state has reported 99,810 cases and 3,826 deaths, but hospitalizations have been declining slightly over the past two weeks, and the number of those in ICU beds remains stable, the governor said.
A 21-mile-long (35 km) column of trucks lined a major highway between Kenya and Uganda on Saturday, a sea of diesel engines and goods headed west but stopped at the border for time-consuming coronavirus tests.
The drivers, stuck on portions of highway between Eldoret, Kenya and the border town of Malaba, told Zenger News that Kenyan authorities are denying them access to food, water and lodging.
Drivers who test negative get certificates allowing them to cross the border again without more tests, even though they could come into contact with a contagious person after crossing the border, and bring the virus back with their paperwork.
Authorities in Uganda are also confiscating cookers at the border, citing security issues, according to truck driver John Omondi.

MINISTER of Health and Wellness Dr Christopher Tufton says he and his public health team welcome the weekend curfew hours as an opportunity to control the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
“The holiday weekend [curfew] — in the eyes of the public health team, of course in deliberations, too, with the Cabinet which ultimately makes the decision — does provide an opportunity for a greater spread of the virus,” Dr Tufton said.
Dr Tufton said that the reasons behind the quarantining of some communities is based on an area being assessed as at-risk, and the public health team moving in thereafter without affecting the rest of the population.

A total of 59 inmates of US federal prisons are reported to have died from Covid-19, the disease caused by the virus.
Ibrahim is housed in a detention centre in the New York City borough of Brooklyn that has recorded no inmate deaths or current infections, but reports that five inmates at the facility have recovered from cases of Covid-19.
George Goltzer, a New York attorney who has represented Baktash Akasha, wrote in an email on Thursday: “I have no further comments on the case or his status in prison.”
Most of the 137,500 inmates of US federal prisons have been largely confined to their cells since the onset of the pandemic in March in an attempt to limit the spread of the virus.
But authorities at the Louisiana facility where Baktash is serving his sentence have failed to isolate several inmates who tested positive for the virus, according to the labour union representing prison officers at the state's Oakdale Federal Correctional Complex.

Family Bank has recorded 85 per cent jump in net profit for the three months to March as removal of the rate cap in November 2019 unlocked interest income.
“The increase in loans and advances to customers positively impacted the bank’s bottom-line, with an increase in interest income from loans and advances hitting Sh1.7 billion during the first quarter of 2020, up from the Sh1.4 billion that the bank made during the same [sic] period in 2019,” said Family Bank CEO Rebecca Mbithi.
Family Bank registered the growth at a time the rate cap law had been repealed, growing customer deposits by 18 per cent to Sh61 billion while focusing on automation and digitisation that has seen the lender move 80 per cent of transactions online.
Ms Mbithi said the bank will weather the coronavirus storm by focusing on cost containment by encouraging the use of alternative banking solutions to meet customer needs during this period.
LOS ANGELES — Only about half of the 15,000 hotel and motel rooms that California has leased for mostly homeless people to slow the spread of the coronavirus are now occupied, it was reported May 19.
Project Roomkey is largely funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which has vowed to reimburse the state and individual counties for 75% of the cost of leasing hotel rooms and providing services.
The county Board of Supervisors voted unanimously May 12 to find long-term housing for homeless individuals housed temporarily in motels, hotels and elsewhere during the coronavirus outbreak.
Project Roomkey has been the centerpiece of the county’s efforts to move quickly in the face of the pandemic, taking advantage of unused hotel and motels rooms to house the homeless.
In April, the Norwalk City Council passed an emergency moratorium seeking to block the county from converting properties into temporary housing for the homeless without the city’s approval.

In a telephone interview from his hospital bed, Zubair, a mechanical engineer, said flight PK8303 had taken off on time from the eastern city of Lahore at 1 p.m.
It was a smooth, uneventful flight until the aircraft began its descent near Karachi shortly before 3:00 p.m.
“Suddenly the plane jerked violently, once and then again,” said Zubair.
Many of the passengers aboard the flight were families returning home for the holiday, said Science Minister Fawad Ahmed Chaudhry.
WASHINGTON, DC, United States (AP) — President Donald Trump says he deems churches and other houses of worship “essential” and called on governors across the country to allow them to reopen this weekend despite the threat of spreading the novel coronavirus.
“Today I'm identifying houses of worship — churches, synagogues, and mosques — as essential places that provide essential services,” Trump said during a hastily arranged press conference at the White House, where he didn't take questions.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had prepared a draft of reopening guidelines for churches and other houses of worship weeks ago that included measures like maintaining distance between parishioners and limiting the size of gatherings.
Trump yesterday stressed the importance of churches in many communities and took issue with some of the businesses that had been allowed to reopen.
“Some governors have deemed liquor stores and abortion clinics as essential” but not churches, he said.
Just 42 per cent of those who went to concerts, movies, theatres or sporting events, at least monthly before the outbreak, say they'd do so in the next few weeks if they could.
The majority of those whose household suffered a layoff still believe they will return to their previous employer, but the share expecting their job will not return has risen slightly over the past month, to 30 per cent from 20 per cent.
Consumers make up roughly 70 per cent of US economic activity, so anything less than a total recovery in spending would force many companies to permanently close and deepen the financial pain for 39 million people who have lost jobs in roughly the past two months.
Forty-nine per cent of Americans approve of how President Donald Trump is handling the economy, the poll shows.
Among those who did so at least monthly before the outbreak, Republicans are far more likely than Democrats to say they'd go to restaurants (69 per cent to 37 per cent), movies, concerts or theatres (68 per cent to 28 per cent), travel (65 per cent to 38 per ent) and go to a gym or fitness studio (61 per cent to 44 per cent).
