Middle school principal Jamaal Bowman is declaring a win against New York’s longest-serving Congress member Rep. Eliot Engel in the Democratic primary for New York’s 16th Congressional District.
According to Vox, although the Democratic Party supported Engel, Bowman rode a progressive agenda and endorsements from Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, and New York Public Advocate Jumaane Williams to victory.
“Eliot Engel—and I’ll say his name once—used to say he was a thorn in the side of Donald Trump,” Bowman said on the night of the election.
He is heavily involved in education activism in New York and painted Engel as absent and an awkward fit in an area that has changed.
While the election isn’t final due to a large number of absentee ballots that need to be counted, according to Decision Desk HQ, Bowman’s lead is too big for Engel to overcome.
