Alicia Khan won gold for Trinidad and Tobago on Tuesday at the 2022 Special Olympics USA Games in Orlando, Florida.
Khan's medal – the first for Special Olympics Trinidad and Tobago (SOTT) – came in the bocce singles event.
In a press release on Tuesday, SOTT praised Khan who had to overcome overnight bouts of discomfort.
She won her semifinals against Kathy Lubach of Special Olympics Virginia before winning her final.
SOTT's head of delegation Francis Samaroo was elated after the victory. "This is truly the stuff that makes great champions in sport. Rising above adversity and personal challenges is what champs do,” he said.
Khan will now move on to doubles and team competition.
TT's Michele Cooper and Isaiah Thomas both have opportunities for bocce bronze medals in their respective divisions. Gary James-Boodoo will be contesting for fifth place in his bocce event.
