In May, Burundi held a presidential election which was won by Evariste Ndayishimiye, candidate of the ruling National Council for the Defense of Democracy - Forces for the Defense of Democracy (CNDD-FDD) party.

Ndayishimiye was hurriedly sworn in after the untimely death of president Pierre Nkurunziza in June.

Rights violations continue

The Council encouraged donor countries which had suspended aid to Burundi to continue dialogue towards resumption of development assistance.

A report by a UN watchdog in September said human rights violations were still being committed in Burundi, including sexual violence and murder.

The country was plunged into a crisis in April 2015 when Ndayishimiye’s predecessor Pierre Nkurunziza decided to run for a controversial third term, which he ultimately won in July 2015.

His candidature, which was opposed by the opposition and civil society groups, resulted in a wave of protests, violence and even a failed coup in May 2015.

Hundreds of people were killed and over 300,000 fled to neighboring countries.

Dozens of Christian conservative activists and clergy members defied Virginia’s stay-at-home order and gathered Saturday for a “Pray for VA, Pray for USA event.”

On March 30, Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam put an executive order in place because of the COVID-19 pandemic requiring residents to stay at home with exceptions for jobs and activities deemed “essential.”

“What is more remarkable is that many churches have obeyed that unjust order to abstain from worship in the Lord’s table,” the Rev. Paul Michael Raymond told the attendees Saturday.

Raymond is the pastor of the Reformed Bible Church in Appomattox, Virginia, which has not shut down during the pandemic.

“The state has tried to dictate how, when, and where the church worships,” Raymond told attendees at Saturday’s event.

How ethnic, racial diversity drive corporate bottom line

Wednesday, June 24, 2020 0:01

By RUFUS MWANYASI

Bubba Wallace, the only Black driver in Nascar’s top series, wears a “I Can’t Breathe - Black Lives Matter” T-shirt under his firesuit at Martinsville Speedway in Virginia.

According to the International Labour Organisation (ILO), one of the best proxy indicators of discrimination in the world of work is the unemployment rate, and here the evidence that certain racial minorities are being particularly hard hit especially in the current economic downturn is solid.

For example, in the United States Department of Labour numbers show that unemployment rate remains almost twice as high for African-Americans relative to the white population in the United States, and the gap has widened since the beginning of the Covid-19 crisis.

What is shocking is that even in the face of proof that racial equality works, discrimination continues.

In the US specifically, studies have shown that there is a linear relationship between racial and ethnic diversity and better financial performance: for every 10 per cent increase in racial and ethnic diversity on the senior-executive team, earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) rise 0.8 percent.

The Ministry of Health is banking on the community policing groups such as the Nyumba Kumi Initiative, local administration and estate groups to monitor the Covid-19 patients on home-based care.

Health Chief Administrative Secretary Mercy Mwangangi said this on Monday when she announced 59 new Covid-19 cases, raising the national tally to 4,797.

She said this as the government released more than 600 Covid-19 patients showing no symptoms for home-based care, stepping up its plans to free-up bed spaces for seriously-ill patients in hospitals.

The ministry launched the home-based care a fortnight ago to lessen the burden being borne by public facilities owing to the increasing number of Covid-19 patients.

Well-known boho-chic clothing store Anthropologie is the latest brand to be called out for their hypocritical support of the Black Lives Matter movement on social media.

Dozens of former employees, influencers and customers are accusing the brand of racism in the workplace, racial profiling, and requesting black influencers to work without pay.

The code names different retailers have used to profile POC shoppers have come to light in lawsuits over the years—Moschino’s “Serena”, Zara’s “special order”, or Versace’s “D410” (the merchandise color code they use for black shirts)—but Anthropologie’s is maybe the most insidious yet.

Comments from multiple employees confirm that stores in California, Chicago, Seattle, NYC and Canada use the code name “Nick” to refer to Black shoppers.

Dozens of Christian conservative activists and clergy members defied Virginia’s stay-at-home order and gathered Saturday for a “Pray for VA, Pray for USA event.”

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam put an executive order in place on March 30 because of the COVID-19 pandemic requiring residents to stay at home with exceptions for jobs and activities deemed “essential.”

A family-run eatery in Prince George's County known for its seafood, service and house band, and a favorite among the local African-American community, now finds itself under fire after a reported racial incident between the owner and a customer.

Just over a week ago, a Black man attempted to enter the restaurant seeking to place his order when, allegedly, the owner blocked his entrance, saying that he could not come in wearing a T-shirt which said, \"I can't breathe.\"

The T-shirt's message, which references the recent death of George Floyd and other Black men at the hands of law enforcement, has become a rallying cry for protesters both in the U.S. and around the world as they've taken to the streets demanding change within police departments including the need for de-escalation policies and defunding.

Eventually, allegedly due to the outrage of employees who are mostly Black, the owner relented – allowing Rollins and his family to enter and even providing free food and drinks.

Cory Brim, a Black business owner and regular patron of The Fish Market, has employed social media over the past few days, posting interviews he's held with several people as they marched with signs and voiced their displeasure.

Thousands of street children in Addis Ababa are being moved to shelters as COVID-19 cases soar in the east African nation

ADDIS ABABA - When Olana Abdulsewud was woken by the police in Addis Ababa early one morning in March, the Ethiopian teenager was relieved.

Begging to survive on the streets had become increasingly tough for Olana, one of an estimated 10,000 homeless children in Ethiopia's capital, since the arrival of the new coronavirus.

Authorities in Addis started rounding up street children in March to prevent them from contracting and spreading the virus - so far more than 4,100 have been placed in shelters - and the drive is being ramped up as coronavirus cases rise nationwide.

Despite rapid growth in the past decade, inequality is stark in Ethiopia where a growing number of children have been driven from their homes - by poverty or neglect - and ended up begging or selling wares to survive life on the streets, charities said.

Tatek Abebe, an academic who has done research into Ethiopia's street children, said factors such as rural poverty and ethnic violence meant most of these children would prefer to remain in Addis rather than move back home to the countryside.

Drag Race Brasil season 1 star Organzza is speaking out amid ongoing attacks from racist fans, including fans showing up to her live event just to harass her.  Organzza, who is considered the frontrunner for the crown with 3 wins, one of the only two Black queens this season (along with Shannon Skarllet, who was eliminated in the top 5 episode this week). While Drag Race fans who have attacked her claim their attacks are because of perceived favoritism from the judges, it’s not a far stretch to believe that this opinion is fueled in part by racism. Organzza wrote an extensive thread on X (formerly known as Twitter) about her harassers taking things to an even worse level by showing up in person to bash her. Last week, Norman Pearlstine, the editor of the LA Times, sent a memo to staffers announcing that the publication will begin capitalizing “B” in the word Black in its articles when referring to a race of people.

Last week, other media organizations across the country, including BuzzFeed News, NBC News, MSNBC, Metro Detroit, and others, announced that they have made the decision to begin capitalizing the “B” in Black as well.

“I’m writing today to request the mainstream news media begin capitalizing the “B” in Black when describing people and the community,” wrote Glover.

Larry Lee, the publisher and CEO of the Sacramento Observer, the oldest Black-owned news publication in California’s capital city said whenever he sees a lowercase “B” in Black, it feels like a “slap in the face.”

Lee, who’s is 47, says for as long as he can remember, the Observer and other Black-owned newspapers across the country have capitalized the “B” in Black also to affirm the humanity of African Americans, evoke a sense of cultural pride,  and to align themselves with the 1970’s “I’m Black and I’m Proud” movement popularized in pop culture by James Brown and others.

Yesterday (June 28) Virgil Abloh unveiled his highly anticipated artwork for Pop Smoke’s posthumous album, Shoot For The Stars and to say that it was a dud would be a gross understatement.

Social media immediately pounced on the revelation and took the famed fashion designer to the woodshed for decorating Pop Smoke’s album cover with the type of special effect features used in 1995’s Mortal Kombat film.

Whether or not Pop’s team goes with another Virgil designed album cover or enlist the talents of someone else remains to be seen, but one things for damn sure, Virgil treated this project like it was a bail fund for protestors or something.

For his part Virgil took to IG to explain that the terrible album cover actually had a lot of thought go into it by both him and Pop, and though it seemed like a bunch of stuff just thrown together, there’s actually a deeper meaning behind the design.
