A RECORD 10 Zanu PF candidates have submitted CVs to contest in party primary elections scheduled for this weekend for the Marondera East seat. BY JAIROS SAUNYAMA The seat fell vacant following the death of Patrick Chidakwa. This is the second time Zanu PF has had a huge number of candidates battling it out in primaries. Goromonzi South recorded 13 candidates in 2018. Last weekend, Zanu PF convened a provincial elections committee meeting in Marondera where it was announced that 10 candidates had shown interest in contesting in the primaries. Provincial secretary for administration Kudzai Majuru said all was set for the vetting process. “We are waiting for the vetting process to be concluded before we get a final date for the primary elections,” he said. Those who submitted their CVs include Paradzai Bhasikoro, Tatenda Watambwa, Farai Mabvuwe, Taurai Chikukwa-Songore, Harold Gamu, Jeremiah Chiwetu, Sami Mahufe, Fiona Tangawashe, Richmond Chikowore and Ngonidzashe Mandaza. The late Chidakwa took over from Chiwetu in the primary elections held in 2018 after having been a councillor in Marondera Rural District Council. Hundreds of people took to the streets in South Africa on Wednesday to voice outrage at the shooting of peaceful demonstrators in Nigeria.
Africa's most populous country has faced growing unrest as a protest over brutality by a Nigerian police unit known as SARS ballooned into wider grievances against the government.
Witnesses said gunmen opened fire on a crowd of over 1,000 people in the main city of Lagos on Tuesday, with Amnesty International reporting that several people were killed.
On Wednesday, demonstrators draped in the national flag of Nigeria and chanting liberation slogans marched to Abuja's embassy in Pretoria carrying banners reading \"End police brutality\".
Another group of about 400 people in Cape Town, mostly Nigerian nationals, vowed to continue picketing until there was change in Nigeria.
Well-known South African rap star AKA voiced solidarity with the people of Nigeria, saying: \"How can people shoot to KILL their own countrymen and women?\"

Nigerians protesting against police brutality stayed on the streets in Lagos on Wednesday, breaking the government curfew following a night of chaotic violence in which demonstrators were fired upon, sparking global outrage.
Shots were fired Wednesday as young demonstrators set up barricades by the Lekki toll plaza in Lagos, where protesters had been fired upon Tuesday night, causing numerous injuries although officials said no deaths.
One protester told The Associated Press that his brother was shot and killed in the previous day's demonstrations and that he himself had been hurt in the leg.
Gunfire could be heard across Lagos, Nigeria's largest city of 14 million, including on the highway to the airport, at a major bus station, outside the offices of a television station and at the Lekki tollgates. Smoke could be seen billowing from several points in central Lagos.
Demonstrations and gunfire were also reported in several other Nigerian cities, including the capital city, Abuja.
The nationwide #EndSARS protests against police brutality have rocked Nigeria for more than two weeks. They started after a video circulated of a man being beaten, apparently by officers of the police Special Anti-Robbery Squad, known as SARS.
In response to the protests, the government announced it would disband the SARS unit, which Amnesty International says has been responsible for many cases of torture and killings.
The demonstrators' demands have widened to include calls for accountable government, respect for human rights and an end to corruption in Africa's most populous nation of 196 million.

Anti-Police Brutality Protest Sees Police Brutality
National armed forces opened fire on Nigerian youth in Lagos at an anti-police brutality demonstration on Tuesday — injuring around 50 people and shooting at least 20 dead, as per unconfirmed reports
Amnesty International which has already condemned the use of excessive force by the Nigerian police to subdue protesters, stated there was ``\"credible but disturbing evidence'' of the incident.
\"While we continue to investigate the killings, Amnesty International wishes to remind the authorities that under international law, security forces may only resort to the use of lethal force when strictly unavoidable to protect against the imminent threat of death or serious injury,\" Amnesty tweeted.

The escalation in violence comes two weeks after the #EndSarsNow movement took to the streets across Nigeria, following the circulation of video showing a man being beaten, apparently by police officers of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, known as SARS.
The government proclaimed the dissolution of the police unit which has been accused of human rights crimes including abuse, torture and killings but has since created the Special Weapons and Tactics team (SWAT) in its stead further inciting the youth to seek complete police reform.
Smoke was billowing from a Lagos prison and gunshots were heard on Thursday as fresh unrest rocks Nigeria's biggest city after the shooting of protesters.
Police close to the scene told AFP that assailants had attacked the detention facility in the upscale Ikoyi neighbourhood.
A curfew is underway in Lagos after security forces shot at protesters on Tuesday. Amnesty International said at least 12 people were killed in the unrest.
The international community, including the African Union, has condemned the violence.
Nigeria's army said the shootings were \"fake news\".
Police Minister Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi told the BBC that troops were not ordered to open fire on protesters.
\"I cannot say who is involved in the shooting... definitely not the police. Soldiers have already spoken about this, they are denying their involvement,\" he said.
President Buhari has yet to comment publically while Nigeria's vice-president has promised justice for victims.
Yemi Osinbajo said his \"heart goes out\" to the victims of the shooting as well as policemen and others who have lost their lives in several days of turmoil in Africa's most populous country.
The protests started two weeks ago over brutality by the police's Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).
The protests quickly spiralled into broader demands for change as promises of reform failed to stem the anger and violence flared.
At least 56 people have died across the country since the demonstrations began, with about 38 killed nationwide on Tuesday alone, according to Amnesty.

The first resolution was that the proposed transaction being the offer made by African Sun to acquire up to 1 005 of the issued share capital of Dawn by means of a share swap through the issuance of 616 126 718 new African Sun ordinary shares to Dawn shareholders at a swap ratio of one African Sun ordinary share for every 3,988075946 Dawn ordinary shares. The resolution clearly specified that Dawn shareholders who accept the offer will become shareholders in African Sun and Dawn may become a subsidiary of African Sun. In a half year results statement for 2020, Dawn said the board received an offer from African Sun Limited to acquire 100% of the issued shares of Dawn in May this year. THE United Nations says huge volumes of firearms are being trafficked into the Southern African Development Community region with Angola and Botswana being among countries that are most affected by the illegal arms trade. The report, by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), comes at a time Zimbabwean security forces have launched an investigation into an alleged proliferation of illegal firearms in the country. The report, titled Global Study on Firearms Trafficking, was released during the virtual UN General Assembly summit. A total of 12 000 illicit firearms were seized in Angola this year alone, while 1 000 were confiscated in Botswana, making the two countries the worst affected. Angola is also the most affected African country. However, the UNODC warns this might not be a true reflection of the situation because of under-reporting and lack of capacity to intercept the arms in other countries. Apart from the two, no other southern African country appears on a nine-member list featuring prominently countries in the strife-torn East and West African regions. Kenya is the second most affected African country after Angola. “The seized firearms include pistols and sub-machine guns,” the report read. “In Africa, the largest quantities of seized weapons were registered in Angola and Kenya. Aside from the prevalence of shotguns generally, notable proportions of machine guns were seized in Tunisia and of sub-machine guns in Burundi. “In the Central African Republic, aside from miscellaneous weapons such as grenades, artisanal weapons and cannons, the remaining seized weapons were predominantly rifles and sub-machine guns. “However, many countries in Africa appear to have a lower capacity to intercept and report trafficked firearms, which may lead to under-reporting of some types of firearms. “Moreover, the total figures reported by countries include seizures which are not directly connected to trafficking. Based on customs seizures at borders, rifles emerge at par with pistols. This suggests that firearms such as rifles may play a bigger role in global trafficking pat-terns than what is reflected in the currently available data.” The report noted that the majority of weapons were sourced from the United States and were used in violent crimes and conflicts on the continent, while some of the deadly weapons would be intercepted while in transit to other destinations. “Northern America is the principal sub-region of departure for seized firearms, according to the available data. Trafficking by land remains the most common type of cross-border cases, accounting for roughly two-thirds of the total.
