During the American Revolution, those who were enslaved in the United States and decided to fight on behalf of the British were guaranteed their freedom. Some of those soldiers chose to settle with their families in Freetown, Sierra Leone. When they arrived, the first thing they saw was the giant Cotton Tree, which made them feel truly free, and in turn, inspired the name of the town.
