Meanwhile, Amnesty International said Thursday that scores of civilians were killed in a \"massacre\" in the Tigray region, that witnesses blamed on forces backing the local ruling party.
The \"massacre\" is the first reported incident of large-scale civilian fatalities in a week-old conflict between the regional ruling party, the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), and the government of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, winner of last year's Nobel Peace Prize.
\"Amnesty International can today confirm... that scores, and likely hundreds, of people were stabbed or hacked to death in Mai-Kadra (May Cadera) town in the southwest of Ethiopia's Tigray Region on the night of 9 November,\" the rights group said in a report.
Amnesty said it had \"digitally verified gruesome photographs and videos of bodies strewn across the town or being carried away on stretchers.\"
The dead \"had gaping wounds that appear to have been inflicted by sharp weapons such as knives and machetes,\" Amnesty said, citing witness accounts.
Witnesses said the attack was carried out by TPLF-aligned forces after a defeat at the hands of the Ethiopian military, though Amnesty said it \"has not been able to confirm who was responsible for the killings\".
It nonetheless called on TPLF commanders and officials to \"make clear to their forces and their supporters that deliberate attacks on civilians are absolutely prohibited and constitute war crimes\".
Abiy ordered military operations in Tigray on November 4, saying they were prompted by a TPLF attack on federal military camps -- a claim the party denies.
The region has been under a communications blackout ever since, making it difficult to verify competing claims on the ground.
Abiy said Thursday his army had made major gains in western Tigray.
Thousands of Ethiopians have fled across the border into neighboring Sudan, and the UN is sounding the alarm about a humanitarian crisis in Tigray.
Good Black News is grateful to brilliant young woman Zyda Culpepper Mellon for taking the time to put her thoughts and feelings on current events sparked by the brutal killings of Ahmaud Arbery and George Floyd into words and sharing her spot-on, heartfelt and timely message.
Mellon’s video appeared first on Facebook three days ago and has started going viral.
Now, with her permission, Good Black News is sharing it directly on our site.
Mellon’s labor not only educates and challenges those who need it, it offers a tool to those who are struggling to find the words to say to white colleagues, friends and family while dealing with so much anger and trauma:

The year 2020 has been a whirlwind of events. With all of the disarray in the nation, one thing has been proven true; that Black votes matter.
In such a historic election, Black voters came out in some of the largest numbers ever seen, delivering President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris to the White House. Cities with heavy Black populations like Detroit, Philadelphia, and most historic of them all, Fulton County, G.A., managed to turn their states as poll workers counted each mail-in ballot. In any case, the community worked as a team, following the lead of several key players who helped usher registration forms and voters to the polls nationwide.

Netflix spy thriller to help beat lockdown boredom

Netflix still seems to be the top dog in the game.
But while others are catching up fast, Netflix still seems to be the top dog in the game, offering everything from comedy and drama to documentaries and mysteries.
Personally, I have a preference for spy thrillers like “Traitors”, a British-American murder mystery that I highly recommend.
But we quickly can see that Rowe is the villain whose ulterior motive seems to be that of winning the incipient Cold War.
He wants to get his hands on Feef, not romantically, but to turn her into a spy whom he plans to “handle” while he guides her into infiltrating the British Foreign Office to detect who’s the Russian mole working there.
