DEVELOP ME: TAPIWA GOMO SEVERAL leaders regret having to lead in a season when the world is grappling with the worst pandemic in a century. Most politicians seek office promising to do one thing when their intention is to do something else. In the absence of real challenges, the majority of current leaders do neither what they said nor what they intended and spend their terms looking for opportunities to line their pockets. The COVID-19 pandemic is a game-changer. It demands real leadership, responsibility and statesmanship and not just mere opportunistic politicians. This entails high level of integrity and ability to stand up for what is right, even when it is against the grain. It is small things like reprimanding your friends for breaking national lockdown laws by holding super spreader gatherings risking their own lives and those of others that matter. Human life, including leadership’s families and friends is now at risk than ever before. Any slackening or dropping of guard spells trouble, doom and death. On January 26, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson apologised to his people after his country passed the 100 000 coronavirus deaths mark. He is aware that his primary constitutional responsibility is to protect citizens from harm. He regretted, “the years of life lost, the family gatherings not attended and for so many relatives the missed chance to even say goodbye,” and apologised for every life lost. That is leadership, may be a characteristic not inherent in ours. Despite the United States having recorded more than 26 million cases and 437 000 deaths, former President Donald Trump did not see it necessary to do what Mr Johnson did. He instead shifted blame to those he disagreed with. He blamed China for the virus and how that has tainted his legacy. He was not ready to take responsibility. There are so many Trumps among us. Some of them have lost those closest to them and they are yet to admit that as failure. This brings us to the most pertinent question; what is leadership? Peter Drucker, an Austrian management expert, defines leadership as the ability of an elected individual to lead, inspire and guide to transform the nation for a good cause. A good political leader is a public servant who works for the betterment of society and protect it from harm. While management is doing things the right way, leadership takes it further to ensure the right things are done. The COVID-19 carnage thus far is an indicator of whether leadership is capable of prioritising time and national resources to protect its people. The dark events of the past weeks have been tormenting and revealing. The lingering and yet torturous question in many people’s minds is if those in leadership or close to it are not safe from the virus, given the resources around them, what then is the fate of ordinary citizens who live in a State where all essential services are neglected? Perhaps, this is why our people now live on hope and prayer. But then when leadership fails, people tend to turn to the alternative leadership in opposition for b

Sporadic gunshots were heard in Lagos on Friday as security forces patrolled Nigeria's biggest city after days of unrest following the shooting of protesters that sparked condemnation at home and abroad.
President Muhammadu Buhari warned demonstrators in a televised address on Thursday not to \"undermine national security\" as he called for an end to widespread protests gripping Africa's most populous country.
The 78-year-old leader was speaking for the first time since the shooting in Lagos on Tuesday, although he did not directly address the incident.
He appealed to the youth to \"resist the temptation of being used by some subversive elements to cause chaos\".
\"For you to do otherwise will amount to undermining national security and the law and order situation. Under no circumstances will this be tolerated,\" Buhari said.
- 'Please stay indoors' -
Nigeria, where many live in extreme poverty and where the median age is 18, is a tinderbox of economic and social grievances.
\"Police officers are currently patrolling major parts of the city to ensure the safety of residents. Please stay indoors,\" Lagos State Police Command said on Friday.
Protests against police abuse erupted on October 8 after a video of an officer allegedly killing a civilian went viral.
Despite the disbanding of the police unit accused of brutality, the federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), protests spread and violence escalated.
Anger spread further after pictures and videos on social media showed security forces shooting on a peaceful crowd of around 1,000 protesters on Tuesday.
Amnesty International said 12 people were killed in the incident, with a total of 56 people dead in the unrest across the country.
- 'Rushing to judgement' -
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called for an immediate investigation into violence by security forces, which has also triggered condemnation by the United Nations, the African Union, the European Union and others.
Nigeria's president shrugged off the international concern.
\"We thank you and urge you all to seek to know all the facts available before taking a position or rushing to judgement and making hasty pronouncements,\" Buhari said.
The spreading of \"deliberate falsehood and misinformation, in particular through social media\" was, he said, \"a ploy to mislead the unwary within and outside Nigeria into unfair judgement and disruptive behaviour.\"
After the president's speech, a key protest group told its followers to \"stay home\" but many made it clear that the movement would continue.
\"The past two weeks have been tough for many Nigerians, most specifically the last two days,\" the Feminist Coalition said in a statement.
\"We hereby encourage all young Nigerians to stay safe, stay home, and observe the mandated curfew in your state.\"
Others in the youth-led movement insist that the demonstrations will continue.

An eyewitness, a student at the school - told africanews that he had gunshots before running to hide.
\"We were having the French language lesson when we heard gunshots. The teacher was the first to escape and I heard people shouting. When I came back to check, I saw dead bodies in the primary [school] section,\" said the student whose identity we're keeping for his own safety.
Schools in Cameroon's English-speaking regions reopned two weeks after a lengthy disruption by armed violence and the pandemic - with government promising to give protection to education institutions.
Civilian installations as well as military ones have been targeted in Cameroon's conflict. Rights groups have accused government forces and militia fighters of committing atrocities.
