Barbadians living overseas want the right to vote in this island’s elections. This is one of the major recommendations presented to the Constitution Reform Commission (CRC) during a recent trip abroad to engage the Barbadian diaspora.Addressing the media at the Parliament Buildings on Friday, Chair of the commission’s Stakeholder Committee Adriel Brathwaite reported that citizens in three cities in the United Kingdom said they wanted the right to exercise their franchise in the land of their birth.“We also went across the United Kingdom, which was very thought-provoking as there were issues that were raised in all three cities.“Our citizens who live in the UK are saying that they would like to participate in any elections in Barbados. We’ve asked them to provide us with a paper in terms of how it can be done. There are some jurisdictions, Brazil comes to mind, and France is one where citizens wherever they are, can vote. But we said to them, this is new territory for us, and we’ll need lots of information to thrash that out.
