At today’s meeting of the Judiciary and Legislation Committee, the committee recommended approval of item #200317 – resolution expressing the City of Milwaukee’s support for Governor Tony Evers’s policing accountability and transparency reforms.
The item was introduced by Common Council President Cavalier Johnson and is co-sponsored by Alderman Michael J. Murphy, Alderman Ashanti Hamilton, Alderman Robert J. Bauman and Alderwoman Nikiya Dodd.
“People in Milwaukee and across the state have advocated diligently for what changes they want to see made in their local communities regarding police reform,” said President Johnson.
The City of Milwaukee should absolutely be on record as in support of these accountability and transparency reforms.”
Among the items included in the Governor’s reform package are: Establishing statewide use of force standards for all law enforcement agencies, requiring each law enforcement officer to annually complete at least 8 hours of training on use of force options and de-escalation techniques, requiring law enforcement agencies to develop policies prohibiting the use of chokeholds, and prohibiting no-knock search warrants.
