A November 26 letter from the presidency asked the head of Uganda's national drug authority to 'work out a mechanism' to clear the importation of the vaccines.

China has about five COVID-19 vaccine candidates at different levels of trials. It was not clear what vaccine was being imported into Uganda.

One of the frontrunners is the Sinopharm vaccine developed by the Beijing Institute of Biological Product, a unit of Sinopharm’s China National Biotec Group (CNBG).

On Wednesday, the United Arab Emirates said the vaccine has 86% efficacy, citing an interim analysis of late-stage clinical trials.

China has used the drug to vaccinate up to a million people under its emergency use program.

On Tuesday, Morocco said it was ordering up to 10 million doses of the vaccine.

Record cases

Uganda on Monday registered 701 new COVID-19 cases, the highest-ever daily increase, bringing its national count to 23,200.

The new cases were out of the 5,578 samples tested for the novel coronavirus over the past 24 hours, the country's health ministry said in a statement.

Tuesday's tally was 606, the second-highest ever number of new infections, bringing the cumulative number of confirmed cases in the east African country to 23,860.

Health authorities have blamed ongoing election campaigns which have drawn huge crowds for the rise in infections.

Attorneys for the former Atlanta police officer charged with killing Rayshard Brooks are disputing statements made about the case by Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard.

Noah H. Pines and Bill Thomas, attorneys for Garrett Rolfe, said in a statement Monday that “while we are waiting for the GBI (Georgia Bureau of Investigation) to finish its investigation, there are certain allegations made by Paul Howard that are simply not supported by the facts.”

For example, the statement says Howard has said Rolfe never told Brooks he was under arrest for driving under the influence.

Howard also announced that the other officer involved, Devin Brosnan, would face an aggravated assault charge for standing on Brooks in the parking lot.

Pines and Thomas also disputed Howard on statutes regarding use of force; statements about whether a Taser is a deadly weapon; and details about the struggle over the Taser between Brooks and the officers.

BY SHARON SIBINDI BULAWAYO-BASED internationally-acclaimed Imbube/Iscathamiya group Black Umfolosi has scored big after its latest album Washabalala Umhlaba (Earth Song) was featured on the World Music Charts Europe (WMCE) for this month. The album, the group’s 17th production, was released in July and stormed the WMCE’s top 10 where it sits on seventh position out of 114 charts. In an interview with NewsDay Life & Style yesterday, Black Umfolosi founder, Sotja Moyo said over the years their achievements have been self-explanatory. “We managed to reach this far through our music marketing company Arc Music based in the United Kingdom. This shows that we are one of the big groups without a doubt from Africa,” he said. Moyo bemoaned lack of appreciation back home. “Only at home have we struggled to be appreciated…….As there is this saying, a prophet will never be honoured in his/her hometown. We have learnt to receive it in that way and it’s a pity,” he said. “We are not fortunate enough to come out from a community that celebrates its own. If that happens, it will be more partisan and holds so much embarrassment for the sector. As a nation, we are yet to come to a time when people will be truly honoured according to their hard work and achievements.” Moyo said the group had travelled to a lot of cities where they saw artistes celebrated and honoured. “As Black Umfolosi, we have travelled the world, went to cities where big world artistes come from. For example, we have been in Tennessee where that country's music icon Dolly Parton comes from. “As you enter the city either by road or through the airport, you will be welcomed by big posters or billboards and buses written “Home of Dolly” with her beautiful face on them, then come to us, Bulawayo in particular, none of that while we have so many artistes, dance and music groups that deserve to be honoured.”

WE commend President Emmerson Mnangagwa for his realisation that the country is in a serious crisis under his leadership, hence his decision to seek divine intervention and have those problems resolved.

The problem we have with him, however, is his refusal to take responsibility for many of the challenges we face as a nation, which need no divine rescue but just need him to make the right decisions and do the right things.

You need no fasting or prayer to simply take practical steps and resolve problem.

This crisis needs individual politicians to put people first and personal pride last rather than a national prayer or fasting programme to witness a shift for the better in the country’s economic fortunes.

Corruption and nepotism under the Mnangagwa administration has reached levels unseen before in this country while human rights abuses in the short space of time he has been in charge make the late Robert Mugabe seem like an angel.
