Charlotte girl's speech on race gets standing ovation

Nationwide protests have taken place since October 7 despite the disbanding of the controversial Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) police unit.

The demonstrators have been accused of attacking police stations and personnel.

The rallies which are mostly attended by young people have become avenues to vent against corruption and unemployment.

Rights groups say at least 15 people have been killed the demonstrations began in early October.

THE South African John Vuligate challenge has taken Zimbabwe by storm, with a local minister joining in the frenzy. BY WINSTONE ANTONIO Mashonaland West Provincial Affairs minister Mary Mliswa-Chikoka (pictured) mesmerised guests when she took to the dance floor for the sdudla dance at the launch of a tourism campaign dubbed ZimBho #IzimYami #Vakatsha in Kariba. The JohnVuligate or sdudla dance move was created in 2016, but started dominating recently after Amapiano group Mapara A’s jazz song called John Vuligate, which features Ntosh Gazi and Calano, went viral. Mliswa-Chikoka, one of the younger ministers in government, brought the house down with her flawless dance moves as she danced to undoubtedly the song of the moment. The event was officiated by Environment, Climate, Tourism and Hospitality Industry minister Nqobizitha Ndhlovu. South African songs are dominating social media and the world perhaps seeking respite from the coronavirus pandemic, as they are not tiring in coming up with the dance challenges. The John Vuligate dance frenzy has since weaved its way to almost every corner of the country much like the hit song Jerusalem by Master KG featuring Nomcebo. The Jerusalem wave has seen many corporates among them Alpha Media Holdings, the publishers of NewsDay, The Standard and Zimbabwe Independent participating in the dance challenge. Meanwhile, Ndhlovu speaking at the ZimBho #IzimYami #Vakatsha said leisure tourism had been minimal and the country’s total capacity as a sector had remained underutilised. “In the past decades, the tourism industry has been characterised by low participation of locals in leisure tourism, while domestic business tourism has been active as it constituted above 80% of tourism activity in Zimbabwe’s all regions except Victoria Falls which was dominated by foreign tourists,” he said. “Leisure tourism has been minimal and our total capacity as a sector has remained underutilised. This is one area we need to seriously work on, to increase the capacity utilisation of our existing facilities and expand our current product capacity in order to achieve our target of a $5 billion tourism economy by 2025.” Ndhlovu said domestic tourism further expanded the value chain and help in building national pride among locals. “As government, we have opened up areas for tourism development to allow for product innovation and diversification in the form of cultural tourism, recreational areas and resort developments,” he said. “Some of the areas earmarked for these developments include, but are not limited to, Tugwi Mukosi, Kanyemba, Osborne Dam, Binga and Kariba. “This development will go a long way in addressing the supply side of Zimbabwe’s tourism with the support from the private sector in implementation to grow local domestic tourism.”

FEAR of breast cancer screening among women has resulted in more women getting affected by the malignant disease. BY PHYLLIS MBANJE/NIZBERT MOYO Organisations such as the Cancer Association of Zimbabwe (CAZ) say that this is worsened by the fact that generally women in rural areas have no access to information on breast cancer. CAZ says there is need to encourage women to undergo regular screening of cancer, adding that it is still difficult to convince most of them to do so. Religiously every year, October has been set aside globally for drawing attention to the vicious disease which affects one in every eight women. Women, who spoke to NewsDay, confirmed that they were afraid to go for cancer screening as they perceived it as a death sentence. “I have never gone for breast cancer screening simply because I am afraid. At times not knowing that one has cancer is better because we have other crises to deal with already,” said a vendor at Copacabana bus terminus in Harare. Her colleagues were in agreement that they were scared of knowing whether they had breast cancer or not. These same attitudes were exhibited by women who participated in a study in Mudzi which looked at knowledge, attitudes and practices relating to breast and cervical cancers. The study was shared in a public health journal last year. According to CAZ, a number of screening tests have been employed including clinical and self-breast exams, mammography, genetic screening, ultrasound, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In Zimbabwe Breast Self-Examination (BSE) is encouraged since most of the lumps are discovered by the women themselves. Breast screening may find cancers early. In older women it saves lives since if a cancer is found, it is likely to be smaller. It may, therefore, be possible to remove the lump (by a lumpectomy) instead of removing the whole breast (a mastectomy). But sadly the bulk of women do not know all these benefits and how to access them while early detection of cancer can save lives. Meanwhile, Mpilo Hospital clinical director Xolani Ndlovu has said that prostate cancer is a cause of 20% of all cancers among men. Ndlovu told NewsDay in an interview that prostate cancer is a major cause of death in the country after cervical cancer. “Among both sexes prostate cancer has the fourth highest incidence of deaths after cancer of the cervix, breast cancer and Kaposi Sarcoma with 7,4% of all new cases recorded in 2018 being prostate cancer,” Ndlovu said. He said most cases of early prostate cancer were asymptomatic; hence most men were unable to know that they have cancer until it was relatively at an advanced stage. The medical expert said all men over the age of 45 were encouraged to go for early prostate cancer screening.

HIGHLANDERS have professed ignorance of a letter inviting defender Peter Muduhwa (pictured) for trials at Mozambican giants UD Songo last week. BY FORTUNE MBELE Reports last week said the steely Warriors defender had been invited for a two-week trial stint at the Mozambican giants to start on October 26 to November 12, but the Bulawayo giants yesterday said they were yet to see that correspondence. The letter, said to be written by UD Songo secretary-general Pensar Jose, invited Muduhwa to Mozambique and required him to travel in possession of a COVID-19 certificate. However Highlanders chief executive Nhlanhla Dube said he had not seen the letter. “I’m only hearing this from you, honestly. If a letter was sent, then it would have been late yesterday (Saturday) or today (yesterday) because I was at the office yesterday for a while and I didn’t see anything,” he said. Sources have, however, said Muduhwa is not interested in travelling to Mozambique to UD Songo, who want to sign him for one year as he eyes playing for the Warriors in the African Nations Championships (Chan) tournament finals next year in Cameroon, where he could attract bigger clubs. The Chan tournament is for locally-based players. Muduhwa in September lost out on a deal to an unmentioned big club in Sudan reportedly because of a clash in agent representation at a time Manica Diamonds’ Last Jesi signed for Al Hilal, which also assessed FC Platinum’s Silas Songani who has since returned home. Muduhwa has reportedly attracted a number of clubs in South Africa and Zambia and his contract with Highlanders expires at the end of the year. He has also been targeted by FC Platinum and Chicken Inn locally. Bosso have lost key striker Prince Dube, who joined Tanzania’s Vodacom Premier League side Azam FC and midfielder Brian Banda, who jumped ship to FC Platinum last month after his contract expired in June. Also on the move after his contract expired in June is striker Tinashe Makanda, who is said to have put pen to paper with Dynamos, but the player has refuted the claims.

Suspected Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels freed more than 1,300 prisoners in an assault on a jail in Beni, eastern Democratic Republic Congo.

Only about 100 prisoners after the attack on Kagbayi prison on Tuesday morning.

The ADF are a Ugandan rebel group with bases in eastern Congo.

\"We had a count before the escape of 1,456 (prisoners), 110 (of them) stayed and I thank them for that. Some 20 (escapees) have already returned and I know that others are on their way back. We'll do a tally, and work out how many have come back\", said Modeste  Bakwanamaha, the mayor of Beni.

Kagbayi prison is used to hold errant army soldiers and militiamen captured in fighting, including some from the ADF.

Jail breaks are common in Congo where conditions in detention facilities are said to be very bad.

Philip Walton is now free after less than a week in the hands of kidnappers. Walton was abducted early Tuesday morning from his farm in Massalata in southern Niger by kidnappers who demanded a ransom from the man's father.

Friday night, a US joint special operations force moved in Nigeria, just across the border, to rescue the American.

\" They went in with a large group, zero casualties. We've got our American citizen, young man, we got our young man back\", US President Donald Trump said, as election day.

Niger has faced a growing number of attacks by extremists linked to both the Islamic State group and to al-Qaida. Walton's abduction came two months after Islamic State-linked militants killed 6 aid workers and their 2 guides in the region.

A U.S. official, who was not authorized to publicly discuss the rescue before an official announcement and spoke on condition of anonymity, said there were no solid indications that Walton's kidnapping was terrorism-related and that it was instead ``trending toward a kidnapping for ransom.''

But the official said the U.S. government was concerned that the hostage could be passed to another terrorist group, or that the kidnapping could become a prolonged hostage-taking.

Voters cast their ballots in Ivory Coast's heated presidential election on Saturday and now they wait eagerly to see who will be the next leader of one Africa's fastest-growing economies.

The vote is seen as a test of stability as two opposition candidates called for a boycott and civil disobedience, calling the vote a \"failure\" of power.

President Alassane Ouattara is running for a contested third term, which the opposition says is \"unconstitutional\".

The president's move sparked deadly pre-election clashes, killing around 30 people, reinvoking the memories of the 2010 presidential vote, which unleashed a brief civil war that saw over 3,000 deaths.

Despite the call for a boycott, Ouattara's ruling Rally of Houphouëtists for Democracy and Peace party said the vote was a success.

\"October 31 was not the day of the flood as predicted by all the opposition leaders, but better, Ivorians have appropriated this election by going to vote massively this morning,\" said Adama Bictogo, executive director of ruling RHDP.

Reports of violence

Saturday's vote was largely calm and there have been no official reports of deadly clashes.

But opposition leader and presidential hopeful Pascal Affi N'Guessan said 12 were killed.

\" We deplore, yet another time, deaths where there have been clashes, a dozen deaths for the moment, including four in Goh and two in the sub-prefecture of Niablé,\" N'Guessan said.

Police dispersed protests that broke out in Abidjan and other towns and fired tear gas, according to an AFP reporter.

The ruling party said there were \"attacks\" by \"violent elements organized by the opposition\"

Ouattara has urged peace and for the opposition to end its call for civil disobedience.

Lion Cub Boom in Kenya

Lion cubs have been spotted in prides from Kenya's Maasai Mara, Nairobi National Parks and the Amboseli park — with the number of lion cubs being born across the country suggesting a baby boom. Perhaps in part due to ongoing initiatives in the region, where conservationism positively meets tradition. Stephanie Dolrery, Co-founder of Lion Guardians, explains the strategic approach, \"The programme we designed is in line with the traditions and cultures so it is encouraging the warriors who traditionally hunt the lions to track the lion and it is not for the weak of heart to go tracking a lion on foot by yourself, it is difficult and it is scary when the lion charges you so you have to be strong and that is for the warriors to do. Maasai are the best at that. Maasai warriors that is what they have traditionally always done so it was a natural fit to bring in lion conservation.\"

Local Traditions Evolve

In the Amboseli area dominated by Maasai pastoralists and their livestock, there are now 6 to 7 lions per 100 square kilometres and the ecosystem now boasts over 250 lions as Maasai warriors who used to hunt lions as a sign of achievement are learning to monitor and protect them instead. Eric Ole Kesoi, Maasi community manager at Lion Guardians, gives some cultural insight on local traditions, \"We used to almost kill any lion that we hear roaring around the Amboseli Ecosystem or even see tracks even if they have not killed anything because of that traditional culture that values bravery and we used to wipe out any lion that we see here. It even reached a time that we used to go all the way, to the neighbouring Amboseli National Park to look for lions because there were no lions close by. My tracking skills were evident from the word go and therefore I was very much involved in lions and tracking and what have you and those skills now, I'm using those skills to closely monitor and conserve lions.\"

Things are Looking Up

For years the African lion population has been in a steep decline — with predictions of their extinction by 2050 by some conservation groups. However, with conservation initiatives, the situation has taken a positive turn as given this cub baby boom — concrete evidence of lions being able to thrive, it appears that their numbers could be on the rise in Kenya for the first time in decades.
