South African freedom fighter Nobel Peace Prize winner and former President Nelson Mandela famously stated: “Overcoming poverty is not a gesture of charity. It is an act of justice. It is the protection of a fundamental human right, the right to dignity and a decent life.”Our Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley in her recent address to the Barbados Chamber of Commerce & Industry, said the one thing that keeps her up at night was the growing problem of criminality in Barbados. It is a worrying and most disturbing situation that drives fear into the hearts of average citizens because they have no way of controlling events, and serious crimes have a way of crippling society and contributing to under-development.There is also another mushrooming issue that is already causing some social campaigners sleepless nights. It is the growing level of homelessness on the island and general poverty.
