THE Nelson Chamisa-led MDC Alliance is today expected to seal the fate of a senior party official, Tendai Masotsha, accused of conniving with State security agents in the abduction of a Bulawayo-based journalism student ahead of the July 31 anti-corruption protests. By NQOBANI NDLOVU Masotsha was suspended as Bulawayo MDC Alliance women assembly’s chairperson after she was linked to the alleged abduction of Tawanda Muchehiwa, a journalism student. Muchehiwa, who is the nephew of ZimLive editor Mduduzi Mathuthu, was allegedly abducted in the city centre and held in captivity for three days, where he was severely tortured by armed men and later dumped at the family home after being linked to the planned protests. The MDC Alliance had initially promised to publicise the outcome of its internal investigations within 48 hours, but party secretary-general Chalton Hwende told Southern Eye that the report was only submitted to the party leadership this week for debate at the national council (NC) meeting today. “Investigations by the Bulawayo province have been completed. The province submitted their reports this week. Obviously, because of the nature of the allegations, the investigations took longer than expected, but we are glad that the investigations are complete,” Hwende said. “The report will be submitted to the NC and the report will be tabled there. The reason behind that is she is a senior member, and it is only that body that can discuss that matter and take appropriate action. “We understand people are anxious, but it is also necessary for us to afford Masotsha an opportunity to present her side of the story, and be properly treated in terms of the party constitution.” In his account, Muchehiwa said he received a call from Masotsha on July 30, the day he was abducted, asking for his assistance to distribute flyers to be used in the foiled July 31 protests. Muchehiwa said this led to his abduction as he believes it was a set-up, a charge Masotsha has denied. She claims the allegations were concocted to fight her along factional lines. Masotsha added that she was also kidnapped on the same day as Muchehiwa and later dumped close to her home the following day. In January, the MDC Alliance Bulawayo province suspended one of its councillors Donald Mabutho accusing him of spying against the party. lFollow Nqobani on Twitter @NqobaniNdlovu

POWER struggles have ripped the MDC-T faction apart ahead of its extraordinary congress slated for September, with interim leader Thokozani Khupe’s aides allegedly assaulted by party secretary-general Douglas Mwonzora’s security staff at the Morgan Richard Tsvangirai House party headquarters in Harare on Wednesday.
The fracas reportedly took place before the party’s Wednesday standing committee meeting when Khupe’s aide, identified as Kudzanai Mashumba, was allegedly assaulted by Mwonzora’s security.
“We were preparing for the standing committee and Khupe’s aides came through wanting to do security checks and also to see where the president was going to sit and other issues as per procedure,” one of the party officials who witnessed the fracas said.
The Supreme Court recently recognised Khupe as bona fide MDC-T interim leader following the death of party founder Morgan Tsvangirai in February 2018.
“Around 2:30pm, there was again another incident when Khupe’s aide only identified as Rice was supposed to attend the Press conference, but was barred by the security personnel who claimed that Khupe’s aides were not allowed at that Press conference,” a high-ranking party official said.

BY BRENNA MATENDERE THE Zimbabwe Christian Council (ZCC) has renewed efforts to bring President Emmerson Mnangagwa and main opposition MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa to the negotiating table to discuss the country’s political gridlock that has resulted in untold economic suffering for the majority citizens. ZCC secretary-general Kenneth Mtata yesterday confirmed the development, saying a meeting of all political parties has been arranged by clerics and will be held in Harare on Monday next week. “On July 13 2020, bishops will be meeting leaders of political parties for a shared reflection on the current situation and explore possible shared solutions. Some principals have already confirmed participation,” he said. Mtata revealed that preparatory meetings were ongoing ahead of the crunch indaba. “This (July 13 meeting) will be a closed-door meeting although a public communiqué will be shared with the media. Bilateral pre-meetings are currently underway in preparation for the consultation. We are not yet able to disclose details of responses (from principals),” he said. Yesterday, Zanu PF and MDC Alliance gave indications of warming up to the call for talks. MDC Alliance deputy spokesperson Clifford Hlatshwayo confirmed that his party had received the invitation. “We have received that invitation and we are processing it within our organs. MDC Alliance is open for genuine initiatives that seek to unite Zimbabweans and resolve the current political crisis. We are the solution,” he said. Asked whether Chamisa would be ready to meet Mnangagwa after snubbing dialogue under the Political Actors Dialogue (Polad) platform, Hlatshwayo said: “The people’s president Advocate Chamisa is ever ready for a genuine dialogue. Remember the problem emanates from a stolen victory of president Chamisa by Mnangagwa … We are ready for any genuine engagement with Mnangagwa. That is what is enshrined in our RELOAD (Road to Economic Recovery, Legitimacy, Openness And Democracy) policy document.” Zanu PF acting spokesperson Patrick Chinamasa, however, said his party was yet to receive the invitation, but would give it due consideration when it comes. “So far we have not received the invite. However, when the invitation comes, we will make our internal consultations within the party hierarchy and organs then make an informed decision. At this stage, we would not want to preempt such processes by commenting a lot on the said invitation for dialogue,” he said. Local church leaders have, since the July 30, 2018 disputed presidential elections, pushed for the two protagonists to meet and patch up their differences, but their efforts always fell flat.
Thursday (Oct.22), Wallace made it official and announced that he will be driving Michael Jordan and Danny Hamlin's new 23XI Racing no.23 car. In a tweet, he shared an introductory video with the caption, "This is the start of the new adventure! So ready! #23XI."
UNDERFIRE opposition MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa has lost legal battle for control of the party headquarters, Morgan Richard Tsvangirai House, popularly known as Harvest House, after the High Court ruled in his rival Thokozani Khupe’s favour.
High Court judge Justice David Mangota yesterday dismissed two applications by Chamisa’s party trying to regain control of the party headquarters after it was grabbed by the Khupe-led MDC-T early this month with the help of the police and soldiers.
Buoyed by a March 30 Supreme Court ruling recognising her as the legitimate MDC-T acting president ahead of Chamisa, Khupe went on a warpath recalling MDC Alliance legislators and taking over the party headquarters in central Harare — generally regarded as the citadel of opposition politics.
Before the judgment, Chamisa went on social media platforms urging his supporters to rise against President Emmerson Mnangagwa, saying the social contract between citizens and government had irretrievably broken.
“There is a liquidity crunch, coupled with food insecurity, high unemployment and high incapacitation across people, workers, government, business and absence of external support, the economy is heading for total collapse.”
THE Thokozani Khupe-led MDC-T party chairman Morgen Komichi yesterday unwittingly exposed that he was a spy who worked to destabilise and undermine MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa.
Addressing a Press conference in Harare yesterday, Komichi said while he played an important role in jettisoning Chamisa into presidency of the party and presidential candidate in the 2018 elections, he never believed in his leadership qualities.
Komichi acted as Chamisa’s chief elections agent and rushed to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission’s podium to declare that the results that gave President Emmerson Mnangagwa a lead in the 2018 general elections were fake.
After ending his romance with the MDC Alliance in March following a Supreme Court order declaring Chamisa an illegitimate leader, Komichi made a volte-face and claimed that youthful leader did not win the controversial presidential poll.
But Chamisa yesterday said Komichi imposed himself on his election team.

By Associated Press Undefined STEPANAKERT, Nagorno-Karabakh (AP) — Rocket and artillery barrage hit residential areas in Nagorno-Karabakh on Saturday hours after the United States hosted top diplomats from Armenia and Azerbaijan for talks on settling their decades-long conflict over the region. The heavy shelling forced residents of Stepanakert, the regional capital of Nagorno-Karabakh, into shelters, as emergency teams rushed to extinguish fires. Local officials said the city was struck with Azerbaijan's Smerch long-range multiple rocket systems, a devastating Soviet-designed weapon intended to ravage wide areas with explosives and cluster munitions. Nagorno-Karabakh authorities said other towns in the region were also […]

By STEPHEN HAWKINS AP Baseball Writer ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Brett Phillips squatted on the field crying, Randy Arozarena sprawled in the dirt pounding his hands on home plate. Tears of joy, smacks of celebration — and a crucial, crazy win for the scrappy Tampa Bay Rays. In one of the wildest World Series finishes ever, the light-hitting Phillips delivered a tying single off Kenley Jansen with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning that turned into the game-ending hit when the Los Angeles Dodgers dropped the ball twice, allowing Arozarena to scramble home and lifting the Rays […]

THE Zimbabwe National Water Authority (Zinwa) has reportedly refused to restore water supplies to Binga Rural District Council until the local authority has paid at least $300 000 of its $1,5 million debt. BY PRAISEMORE SITHOLE Zinwa cut off water supplies to Binga in September, forcing residents and business operators to turn to boreholes and other unsafe water sources. Binga Residents Association vice-chairperson Samson Sibanda said Zinwa recently met council officials and indicated that it would restore water supplies after the local authority has paid at least $300 000 towards settling the bill. “We met and agreed on the way forward for water to be reopened. Council is the one that owes Zinwa money and not the residents. For water to be reopened Zinwa said they require at least $300 000 from the council,” Sibanda said. “Residents of Masoja area who are affected by the water cut started to protest and demonstrate saying they had been paying council and the issue has to be resolved immediately.” Binga district development co-ordinator Farai Marinyame confirmed that stakeholders met on Wednesday to try to resolve the crisis. “I was not on the ground, but there was a meeting between Zinwa, residents and the council to solve the ongoing water crisis. For now there is still no water as council is still negotiating with Zinwa so that they take that project,” Marinyame said. “The main problem is that residents are not paying up.” Binga RDC chief executive officer Joshua Muzamba said he was still out of Binga. “I am still out of Binga, just look for those on the ground who can give you information,” he said. Zinwa spokesperson Marjorie Munyonga, who previously pleaded with residents to pay up, yesterday said she was out of office and was yet to be briefed on the latest developments.
WHEN I look at what is happening in my beloved country, my heart bleeds. I feel like tearing myself apart with anger. I feel like I don’t belong to this nation and yet Zimbabwe is my only country which I call home. By Leonard Koni, Our Reader At one time, Zimbabwe was once a very good country, a hub of economic development even when we took over from the colonial system. There was a radical change since 1997 when war veterans demanded to be compensated by the government. From that period, the country’s economic performance started faltering and on the other side, the late former President Robert Mugabe’s regime started looting the country while he was busy protecting his subordinates under the politics of entitlement. This is exactly what is happening today under the current leadership. When I remember the horrific winter of June 2008, a few days before the June 27, 2008 election run-off, I see the brutality of this regime. I thought change was coming in 2017, but the script has remained the same. There are plenty of Zimbabweans who are scattered around the globe, not because they want to be there, but are simply running away from the harsh economic, social and political environment back home. They are very innocent citizens seeking to eke a living. Life back home has become tough. However living in a foreign land has never been easy, home is always the best, but the current political, economic and social situation in the country leaves a lot to be desired. This is the time for all Zimbabweans to speak with one big voice and unite globally to fight this system peacefully by rejecting and ejecting the system in our country. Zimbabweans are peace-loving people and what they are all yearning for is to be heard by an ear which is ready to listen, but their patience has been stretched too far. The more you fight with a snake and pushing it to the corner, the more it will fight back for its life. The level of dictatorship and State capture in the country and within this new government masquerading as the new dispensation has gone too far and is subject to scrutiny. The majority of Zimbabweans have lost confidence in this new republic and the situation has become even worse than we were before the coup. The people have been asking for the arrest of corrupt government officials, but no action is being taken. Has the voice of the people ceased to be the voice of God? Currently, there is no one trusting this Zanu PF leadership. There is actually a leadership vacuum. Even the party members themselves no longer trust each other. The naked truth is that we should not bury our heads in the sand and pretend as if things are normal. It’s high time we should call a spade a spade and stop creating a comfort zone for ourselves. The level of mediocrity and cluelessness of this government has not been found on this earth. We are being led by a deranged, paranoid and clueless regime. If one looks closely at the current Cabinet, one can deduce that President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s ministers do not deserve to be in those ministerial positi

Youths belonging to Thokozani Khupe's MDC-T have fingered the ruling Zanu PF party as behind the highly condemned abduction and torture of an MDC Alliance MP and two female activists last Wednesday.
MDC Alliance MP, Joanna Mamombe, activists Cecilia Chimbiri and Netsai Marova were allegedly abducted by suspected state security agents after they participated in flash anti-government protests in Harare's Warren Park suburb.
In an interview with NewZimbabwe.com, the party's national youth assembly chair, Alfred Dzirutwe said the activists' attacks were state sponsored.
\"We might have our political differences (with MDC Alliance) but it must be noted that an injury to any activist during the course of exercising one's right to freedom of expression and political association is an injury to all of us,\" said Dzirutwe.
To the three MDC Alliance foot soldiers, we wish you speedy recovery,\" he said of the activists who have been hospitalised for injuries sustained from the torture ordeal.
