Heather earned a PhD in comparative women’s history, Latin American history, and the history of sexuality at the Ohio State University in 2002, where she completed her dissertation, “The Teeming Brothel: Sex Acts, Desires, and Sexual Identities in the United States, 1870–1990.” She has an MA in history from the University of Oregon and a BA in history from the California State Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo. While in Ohio, Heather worked as an acquisitions editor at the Ohio State University Press for four years, having previously served as managing editor at the Journal of Women’s History. She has been a historian at Historical Research Associates in Seattle since 2005, where as a senior historian she oversaw the architectural history program from 2007 through 2016. Dr. Miller has written or managed the writing of a number of organizational and administrative histories, historic properties management plans and programmatic approaches to historic preservation, historic resources surveys, and various other mitigation documentation. She works on projects related to environmental and land-use histories, architectural history, historic preservation, heritage tourism, litigation support, and overall cultural resources management at the local, state, and federal levels. She is also HRA’s director of business development. Dr. Miller has moonlighted as a freelance copy editor since the twentieth century with many publications to her credit.
