Electoral authorities in Guinea on Saturday declared President Alpha Conde winner of Sunday's election with 59.49% of the vote, defeating his main rival Cellou Diallo.
\t Some people went to the streets to protest immediately after the announcement. Such demonstrations have occurred for months after the government changed the constitution through a national referendum, allowing Conde to extend his decade in power.
\t Opposition candidate Cellou Diallo received 33.50% of the vote, the electoral commission said. Voter turnout was almost 80%.
\t Political tensions in the West African nation turned violent in recent days after Diallo claimed victory ahead of the official results. Celebrations by his supporters were suppressed when security forces fired tear gas to disperse them.
They accuse the electoral authorities of rigging the vote for incumbent president Alpha Conde.
\t At least nine people have been killed since the election, according to the government. The violence sparked international condemnation by the U.S. and others.
\t ``Today is a sad day for African democracy,'' said Sally Bilaly Sow, a Guinean blogger and activist living abroad. The government should take into account the will of the people who have a desire for change, he said.
ICC warning
The International Criminal Court’s chief prosecutor warned on Friday that warring factions in Guinea could be prosecuted after fighting erupted.
“I wish to repeat this important reminder: anyone who commits, orders, incites, encourages and contributes in any other way to crimes … is liable to prosecution either by the Guinean courts or the ICC,” she said.

The growing disdain for Biden among young Democratic voters has been predicted to dwindle with the promise of a Black woman as vice president, but for many, this is not the case.
This sentiment is shared amongst many young Black voters who are weary of the Democratic Party’s unfulfilled promises as a whole.
Still, other young Black voters aren’t impressed with the pool of choices, and the disdain for Biden is so much that they would risk another four years of Trump.
“I hate to say it, but between Biden and Trump, I’d still vote Trump,” says one young Black woman.
There seems to be no guarantee that the Democratic party will achieve its intended end if Biden chooses a Black woman to run alongside him.
Amadou Toumani Touré , byname ATT (born November 4, 1948, Mopti, French Sudan [now in Mali]), Malian politician and military leader who twice led his country. He served as interim president (1991–92) after a coup and was elected president in 2002. In March 2012 he was deposed in a military coup. He officially resigned the next month.
Touré studied to be a teacher and later joined the army in 1969, receiving military training in France and the U.S.S.R. At one time he was a member of the Presidential Guard in Mali, but he had a falling out with the president, Gen. Moussa Traoré, and lost this position.
Touré first came to international prominence on March 26, 1991, as the leader of a coup that toppled Traoré (who had himself come to power in 1968 in a coup against Modibo Keita). Touré’s coup was generally welcomed because of Traoré’s repressive policies, which had led to popular unrest, often manifested in violent riots, in 1990–91. It was after days of such rioting that the coup took place, and it seemed to many that Touré had acted in the name of the people and brought stability and democracy to the country. Be this as it may, the pro-democracy forces in the country lost little time in organizing the 1992 presidential election, in which Touré did not stand, and he retired as president on June 8, 1992.
For the next decade Touré occupied himself with nonmilitary activities, mostly concerned with public health. In 1992 he became the head of Mali’s Intersectoral Committee for Guinea Worm Eradication, and he was associated with campaigns to eliminate polio and other childhood diseases as well as working for the control of AIDS in Africa, often collaborating with the Carter Center, the nonprofit humanitarian organization run by former U.S. president Jimmy Carter. Touré also was active in trying to resolve disputes in the Great Lakes region (Rwanda, Burundi, and Democratic Republic of the Congo) and served as a United Nations special envoy to the Central African Republic after a coup occurred in that country in

It has been a month since MARTA eliminated and reduced transit service throughout the Atlanta Metropolitan area, including Clayton, DeKalb, Fulton and the City of Atlanta.
On April 20, 2020, MARTA CEO Jeffrey Parker eliminated 70 routes and reduced services without any public hearing and without the approval of the MARTA board.
The actions of MARTA could have a negative impact in the poor communities where riders do not have a car to go to the post office or make it to the local precinct, or to go and participate in early voting because they do not have
a way to get to the polls.
I have read and heard from many citizens who have raised
questions about the actions of MARTA regarding the disparity and inequities in the services and which routes were eliminated.
In order to address these concerns, the MARTA board owes the citizens of
DeKalb, Fulton, and Clayton counties an explanation as to how the routes were selected and why, and a vote by the MARTA board to re-establish those routes that were eliminated.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Campaign staff for Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden are advertising their donations to a group that pays bail fees in Minneapolis after the city’s police jailed people protesting the killing of a black man by a white police officer.
At least 13 Biden campaign staff members posted on Twitter on Friday and Saturday that they made donations to the Minnesota Freedom Fund, which opposes the practice of cash bail, or making people pay to avoid pre-trial imprisonment.
Biden campaign spokesman Andrew Bates said in a statement to Reuters that the former vice president opposes the institution of cash bail as a “modern day debtors prison.”
President Donald Trump’s re-election campaign on Saturday said it was “disturbing” that Biden’s team “would financially support the mayhem that is hurting innocent people and destroying what good people spent their lives building,” in an email about the Reuters story that called for Biden to condemn the riots.
“It is up to everyone to fight injustice,” Colleen May, who identified herself as an campaign organizer for Biden in South Carolina, Wisconsin and Florida, said in a Twitter post that included an image of her receipt from donating $50 to the Minnesota Freedom Fund.
During the 2018 midterms, 53% of voters were women. Yet for some, a distrust of the system and other barriers keep them from the polls.
The new Texas bill, SB7, mandates that you can vote with gun permit but not student ID, no online voter registration, individuals must be deputized to register voters, voters under 65 can’t use fear of COVID to vote by mail. In addition, Texas has closed 750 polling places since the U.S. Supreme Court under John Roberts destroyed the Voting Rights Act of 1965 with their Shelby vs. Holder decision in 2013.

The state of voting rights in 2021 may not be the slave-era of 1821 or the Jim Crow era of 1921, but let there be no doubt we are seeing a renewed systematic and racist effort to restrict the ability of Black voters to exercise the right for which so many have died.
Biden has already had an advantage with Black voters in the primary elections, especially over his former opponent Bernie Sanders.
Biden swept the Black vote in states like South Carolina, while Sanders lost them by a large margin.
Biden is still liable to run into this same issue now that he’s going against Donald Trump in the general elections.
Although Black votes were generally low for Trump during the 2016 elections, Black voter turnout rates dipped for the first time in 20 years in a presidential election, according to the United States Census Bureau.
Black women came out in strong support for Hillary Clinton during the 2016 elections against Trump, according to exit polls.
Other countries scheduled to hold elections are Egypt, Guinea, Seychelles and Tanzania.
For countries that do hold elections, there may be special voting arrangements that can allow polls to go ahead but reduce the risk of spreading the virus.
In South Korea's elections in mid-April, the electoral commission encouraged people to vote before election day at any of the 3,500 polling stations throughout the country.
This not only decongested polling stations on election day but contributed to the highest turnout in the country for nearly 30 years.
This means that countries planning to hold elections in 2020 or early-2021 need to start discussing these arrangements - across party lines and among multiple relevant agencies - as soon as possible.

However, democrats believe that this effort is less about fighting voter fraud and more about enabling voter suppression and making the voting process especially difficult for black voters and other minorities.
Republicans are able to do this in part because of a 2018 federal court ruling that allows the national republican party to start campaigns against alleged voter fraud without court approval.
There was previously a ban on republican party voter-fraud operations after courts found instances of republicans intimidating or prioritizing the exclusion of minority voters, with the most recent account taking place in 2004.
The ongoing global pandemic is also having an impact on the voting process, with several democrats calling for the expansion of voting by mail and some republicans saying that doing so would invite voter fraud.
Fair Fight also believes that republican spending on alleged voter suppression will far exceed $20 million.
Given the generally perceived poor performances of the governments during this period it is no surprise that the three elections have been the most competitive (one seat majorities/minorities for the winner) in the history of Guyana’s elections.
