The fight for African American voting rights, alongside women’s suffrage, began in the 1800s and culminated in the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Notable figures like Sojourner Truth, Ida B. Wells-Barnett, and Frances Ellen Watkins Harper played pivotal roles in advocating for civil and women’s rights.
