At the onset of the Industrial Revolution (circa 1750-1850), European countries began scouring the globe looking for resources to power their economies. Africa, because of its geographic location and its abundance of resources, was seen as a key source of wealth for many of these nations. This drive for control of resources led to the Scramble for Africa and eventually the Berlin Conference of 1884.
At this meeting, the world powers at the time divided up the regions of the continent that had not already been claimed.
Originally, North Africa was settled by the indigenous peoples of the region, the Amazigh or Berbers as they have come to be known. Because of its strategic location on both the Mediterranean and Atlantic, this area has been sought after as a center of trade and commerce for centuries by many conquering civilizations. The first to arrive were the Phoenicians, followed by the Greeks, then the Romans, numerous Muslim dynasties of both Berber and Arab origin, and finally Spain and Portugal in the 15th and 16th centuries.
Morocco was viewed as a strategic trade location because of its position at the Strait of Gibraltar. Although it was not included in the original plans to divide up Africa at the Berlin Conference, France and Spain continued to vie for influence in the region.
Algeria, Moroccos neighbor to the east, had been a part of France since 1830.
In 1906, the Algeciras Conference recognized France and Spains claims for power in the region. Spain was granted lands in the southwest region of the country as well as along the Mediterranean Coast in the North. France was granted the rest and in 1912, the Treaty of Fez officially made Morocco a protectorate of France.
In the aftermath of World War II, many African countries began seeking independence from the rule of Colonial powers. Morocco was among the first nations to be granted independence when France relinquished control in the spring of 1956. This independence also included the lands claimed by Spain in the southwest and in the north

Last week’s Business Talk article highlighted the dismal outlook on employee motivation for firms who erroneously lower staff salaries during Covid-19 without appropriate cause.
Examples of the more egregious coronavirus pay cut scenarios include first, salary and payment reductions that are not uniform across an organisation.
Others are executives receiving the smallest percentage pay cut or none at all but cascading belt- tightening down the chain getting incrementally worse as the employees status, rank, and influence in the firm diminishes, with the lowest level workers receiving the greatest hatchet reduction to their earnings.
Second, some firms disproportionately reduce salaries on the most vulnerable workers which are typically casual, temporary, contract, and part-time employees while blaming coronavirus but not inflicting the same pain on their full-time workforce.
The firm protected vulnerable groups of part-time, casual, and contracted workers the same as full-time regular employees who are still required to put forth the same work output despite the pay cutbacks.

The St. Louis man in a viral video speaks out.
In an interview on \"Fox News Sunday,\" Trump also defended his relationship with Fauci, which has been in the spotlight in recent days after a series of comments by the President and moves by the White House raised questions about Fauci's standing with the administration amid the crisis.
\"Dr. Fauci's made some mistakes, but I have a very good -- I spoke to him yesterday at length -- I have a very good relationship with Dr. Fauci,\" Trump said. \"He's a little bit of an alarmist -- that's OK.\"
Trump in the interview listed several \"mistakes\" he said Fauci has made in recent months, including his original stance on the wearing of masks.
Fauci early in the pandemic had asked the public not to go out and buy the N95 masks because they were needed by health professionals. He has now strongly advocated for people to wear some type of face coverage, and last week urged governors and mayors to \"be as forceful as possible\" to get people to wear face coverings.
During the Sunday interview, Trump ultimately admitted that he himself had made some mistakes in the coronavirus response but said he would \"be right eventually.\"
When host Chris Wallace asked if Trump's errors discredited him, the President said he didn't think so, claiming he has \"been right probably more than anybody else.\"
Last Wednesday, after going more than a month without speaking, Trump had a phone conversation with Fauci, who came under withering attack by Trump's top aides for days before the discussion.
Among the attacks was an opinion article penned last week by Peter Navarro, the senior White House trade official, trashing Fauci. The White House also insisted last Monday that it was not compiling opposition research on Fauci, despite sending a compilation of times they claimed he was \"wrong\" to reporters the previous the weekend.
Speaking to The Atlantic last week, Fauci called White House attacks on him \"bizarre\" and said they ultimately damaged Trump.
\"I cannot figure out in my wildest dreams why they would want to do that,\" he said. \"I think they realize now that that was not a prudent thing to do, because it's only reflecting negatively on them.\"
CNN's Kevin Liptak and Jim Acosta contributed to this report.

We are taking extraordinary measures – going above and beyond all of our normal efforts to keep our hospital and clinics clean and safe – because if you need healthcare, we want you to feel confident and to know you are protected.
We are screening everyone who comes into the hospital, providing facemasks and other personal protective equipment to staff and patients, rearranging our environments to enable social distancing, and, in the event we ever do have any patients with COVID-19 at the hospital, we are caring for them in an area that is separate and isolated from the rest of the hospital.
