The Committee of Experts set up by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for Transport, Logistics, Free Movement and Trade in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, held a virtual meeting on the 8th of June 2020 to firm up guidelines for the harmonization and facilitation of Cross Border Trade and Transportation in the region.

The experts are providing sectorial technical advice to the statutory decision-making bodies of ECOWAS to ensure uniform and coordinated improvement of the transport and logistics sectors, while enhancing the growth of intra-regional trade, free movement and economic growth in the ECOWAS region.

The proposed guidelines for the harmonization and facilitation of cross-border trade and transportation are in line with the West Africa Health Organization (WAHO) and other specialized international organizations such as World Health Organization (WHO), World Customs Organization (WCO), International Migration Organization, International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), International Maritime Organisation (IMO), African Union Commission, Africa Civil Aviation Council, and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) among others.

Among others, the experts are expected to identify appropriate trade and transport humanitarian corridors and propose measures to ensure these corridors are open for medical supplies and personnel so that the fight against Covid-19 is efficient in the short medium term while ensuring continuity in community trade, transport, free movement and cross border businesses in the medium to long term.

The recommendations and the proposed guidelines from the Experts will be submitted to the ECOWAS Ministers in charge of Transport and Trade who meet on 12th of June 2020 for validation.

These big gatherings of protesters in the middle of COVID-19 have many people as well as health officials worried that there will be a huge spike in new cases, especially in those areas with many pre-existing cases.

In saying this, Ghebreyesus asks for protestors to follow the guidelines set out by their local health officials and taking the necessary steps to protect themselves and others from the virus.

Some health officials are calling for other cities to follow suit and have testing available for protestors since they are of high risk.

Health officials believe that the impact that protesting has on COVID-19 cases will not be seen for a couple of weeks.

Not yet knowing how many cases will occur because of protesting, health officials are urging those protesting to be as safe as possible.

A video shared by President Trump on Twitter Sunday includes a man who appears to be a Trump supporter saying \"white power\" in response to protesters.

It shows Trump supporters riding in these golf carts with Trump campaign signs, and there are other people protesting, yelling insults about the president as the people in the golf carts drive by.

Almost immediately, you hear some protesters yelling racist at the people in the golf carts, and then you hear, very clearly, one of the people in the carts respond by saying white power.

He said that the president did not hear the statement white power in the video and that what the president saw was, quote, \"tremendous enthusiasm\" from his many supporters.

(CBM) – As mass protests continued across the state Tuesday, the California Legislative Black Caucus CLBC) called for lasting change in race relations — as well as reform in social justice policy — in California and around the country.

Assemblymember Dr. Shirley Weber (D-San Diego), chair of the CLBC, condemned the destruction and looting that sidelined the demonstrations in California and across the nation.

The legislation, which was fiercely opposed by police unions in California, is now being lauded by activists, policy makers and law enforcement experts across the country as one of the strongest and most effective actions taken by any state to reduce police shootings.

State Senator Holly Mitchell (D-Los Angeles) authored the bill and said the fight for criminal justice reform is met with strong police union resistance in the Legislature and continues in the courts.

Members of the CLBC are: Assemblymember Shirley N.Weber, (D-San Diego), the chair; Senator Steven Bradford (D-Los Angeles), the group’s vice chair; Senator Holy J. In the re-election race of President Donald Trump -- who rivets enough national attention to blot out the sun -- they matter even less. That marketer's talent, now a crippling 2020 weakness, renders last week's sacking of campaign manager Brad Parscale a minor development.

\"Trump is the message, Trump is the strategist, Trump is the campaign manager,\" observes Kevin Madden, a longtime aide to Republican politicians from George W. Bush to John Boehner to Mitt Romney. Against that reality, the plans of new campaign manager Bill Stepien represent mostly \"a bunch of noise.\"

Rather than signaling a turnaround, the move underscores how badly Trump has already damaged his own prospects. Two new national polls in recent days showed the President with a double-digit deficit against Democratic opponent Joe Biden. Trump, not Parscale, dug that hole.

The President started digging long before the coronavirus upended American life. Trump's crude, truculent, divisive style has made him the first President never to reach 50% approval in the Gallup Poll.

He led House Republicans to crushing defeat in the 2018 midterm elections even as the economy grew smartly. By January 2020, as the Democratic primary campaign heated up, Trump trailed Biden by nine percentage points in CNN polling.

In the rolling series of national crises since, Trump has deepened and hardened his disadvantage. That in turn has eclipsed his opportunity to do what presidential re-election efforts typically do: boast of the incumbent's accomplishments, draw a flattering contrast with his opposition, and outline a hopeful second-term vision.

Trump has all but abandoned trying to arrest the pandemic that has so far claimed the lives of more than 138,000 Americans. He repeats obviously false assessments of the crisis, resists promoting the mask-wearing health experts agree would help, and disdains the expertise of his own scientists.

Coronavirus shattered the economic expansion Trump had claimed as his shining achievement. Now his impatience to restore lost growth, by pushing states to re-open prematurely, has accelerated viral spread. That has dampened the nascent recovery, forcing major cities and states to consider re-imposing the costly restrictions Trump pushed so hard to lift.

Protests for racial justice following the death of George Floyd complete the fumbling portrait. The 74-year-old President inflames the crisis instead of calming it, indulging instincts for 1960s-era white backlash as most voters seek something different for a diverse 21st century nation.

From mask-wearing to racially-offensive language to banishing the Confederate flag, the President has driven institutions symbolizing heartland America toward his opponents.

\"When a Republican president is on the wrong side of a cultural war with Walmart and NASCAR, Republicans might pause to think about the insanity Trump makes you defend,\" tweeted Stuart Stevens, a longtime GOP ad-maker. Other Republicans warn his dishonest broadsides against

Emma Azalia Smith Hackley was an African American singer and Denver political activist born in Murfreesboro, Tennessee in 1867.  Her parents, business owners Henry and Corilla Smith, moved to Detroit where she attended Washington Normal School, graduating in 1886.  Smith, a child prodigy learned to play the piano at three and later took private voice, violin and French lessons.

Emma Smith worked as an elementary school teacher for eighteen years.  During that period she met and married Edwin Henry Hackley a Denver attorney and editor of the city’s black newspaper, the Denver Statesman.  In 1900 Hackley received her music degree from Denver University.  In 1905-1906 she studied voice in Paris with former Metropolitan Opera star Jean de Reszke.

Hackley was active in black Denver’s civic and social life.  She founded the Colored Women’s League and served as executive director of its local branch.  She and her husband also founded the Imperial Order of Libyans which fought racial discrimination and promoted patriotism among African Americans.

Hackley separated from her husband in 1905 and moved to Philadelphia where she became director of music at the Episcopal Church of the Crucifixion.  While there she helped organize the People’s Chorus which later became the Hackley Choral Society.  The group proved popular in the Philadelphia area and gave her the opportunity to study voice in Paris in 1905-1906 with former Metropolitan Opera star Jean de Reszke.

Despite her stellar training, Hackley did not pursue a professional career.  Instead she spent much of the rest of her life training a younger generation of singers including Marian Anderson, Roland Hayes and R. Nathaniel Dett.  She did give benefit concerts to raise money for additional training for these and other singers.

Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg released a video this week explaining the process that goes into investigating officer-involved shootings.

The video was created to raise awareness of the investigation process after a recent spate of police shootings, including the well-known raid that ended in the shooting deaths of two people at their southeast Houston home on Harding Street in January 2019.

“The Harris County DA’s office places a priority on ensuring justice for all in each and every police shooting because the public’s trust in our justice system depends on it,” Ogg said.

The DA’s office explains when a police officer shoots a civilian, prosecutors with the Civil Rights Division of the District Attorney’s Office, who are available 24 hours a day, go to the scene.

After the police and investigators turn over all the evidence to the DA’s office, the case is independently reviewed by prosecutors and in every instance all of the evidence is presented to a grand jury for consideration.

The Ministry of Health has placed Rusizi under extra supervision after the Western Province District, which borders DR Congo and Burundi recorded five new Covid-19 cases in just a single day.

The patients were identified by the Ministry of Health as cross-border business operators, truck drivers who ply the Rusizi-Bukavu route, DR Congo, and one taxi motorcyclist.

Dr. Daniel Ngamije, the Minister of Health, said on radio that the five new patients, which were identified in Rusizi are under the ministry's management.

In the case of Rusizi, all five new cases were imported from DR Congo.

Dr. Ngamije explained that had it not been for the new cases in Rusizi District, inter-provincial travels would have been resumed.
