TKR player profile: Sawh to learn from the best in WCPL - Trinidad and Tobago Newsday

SHUNELLE Sawh, 19, has been rising quickly up the ranks in women's cricket and the teenager will be looking for more opportunities when the 2023 Massy Women's Caribbean Premier League (WCPL) begins. Sawh is one of the most promising stars in West Indies women's cricket and she will play for the Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR).

The WCPL will certainly be a learning experience for Sawh as she will rub shoulders with experienced women's cricketers such as TKR captain Deandra Dottin, one of the most dominant T20 players in women's cricket.

The South African pair of Mignon du Preez and Dane van Niekerk, along with West Indies players Anisa Mohammed and Kycia Knight are also in the squad.

Sawh has had a busy time in 2023. She was chosen to represent West Indies at the International Cricket Council Under-19 Women's T20 World Cup in South Africa in January.

Opening the batting during the world cup, she had contributions but struggled to convert starts. Against Indonesia, Sawh showed her ability by scoring 31 in a 95-run opening partnership with St Lucian Zaida James which helped West Indies pull off a massive win.

In May, Sawh was selected to play for the TT Red Force women's senior team and stroked an impressive 68 against regional women's powerhouse Barbados. The Barbados team included the West Indies trio of Hayley Matthews, Shamilia Connell and Shakera Selman.

Connell has also been signed by TKR for the 2023 Women's CPL.

In the women's regional Under-19 tournament in July, held in Trinidad, Sawh was a member of the TT team which won the crown.
