Time to end flooding in Port of Spain - Trinidad and Tobago Newsday

THE EDITOR: Well it was another day of heavy flooding in our main city, "Port of (S)pain," this week. This problem has been with us for decades. Governments come and go, and some come again, but the flooding never leaves, like a torn in the flesh.

Over the years millions of taxpayers' dollars have been spent to rectify this problem, but to no avail. Engineers, experts proffer all types of advice, but no solution. Meanwhile money is being spent and we are in the same old mess when a little rain falls.

What we do have are excuses upon excuses, something we all have grown accustomed to – a plaster for every sore.

To those in charge, this is our main city, our capital. How does this look when visitors come to our shores? Is this what we want to promote to the world? And we talk about tourism as a revenue earner? Can we get real experts and engineers on this?

It is so sad to see people having to walk through high water to get to the bus terminus, cars under water, and places flooded out in Port of Spain. Is that the best we can do?

Also, to the people who frequent the city, please do not use the drain to dispose of your drink bottles, etc. You are contributing to the flooding. I am sure you can find a dustbin. Do the right thing.

On another note, we need to think about constructing more dams. Rain is not falling in the same manner as before, hence the reason why the water levels of our dams are so low. Do not wait for a crisis then act. The signs are there. Act now.
