The blind leading the blind - Trinidad and Tobago Newsday

THE EDITOR: Under this government, one gets the feeling that it is the blind leading the blind.

The recent surge in dengue fever cases, resulting in the tragic death of a fifth person, underscores a profound failure in our public health system. Health Minister Deyalsingh has shown an alarming inability, or unwillingness, to implement effective measures to protect us from this preventable disease.

This incompetence extends beyond health care.

If our leaders cannot manage a mosquito-borne disease, how can we trust them to address the more complex issues of crime, poverty, injustice, and inequality plaguing our society?

The lack of decisive action and concrete mechanisms to safeguard our health only deepens the public's doubt about the ability to govern effectively.

In contrast, the Leader of the Opposition, Mrs Persad-Bissessar, and the UNC have proposed comprehensive solutions to combat dengue and other public health crises. They advocate for increased funding for vector-control programmes and enhanced public education campaigns to inform citizens about mosquito prevention.

Additionally, they recommend utilising advanced technology for early detection and rapid response to outbreaks. Their approach also includes community involvement initiatives, ensuring citizens are active participants in safeguarding their health.

Furthermore, Persad-Bissessar and the UNC emphasise the need for a more robust public health infrastructure that includes improving healthcare facilities, ensuring adequate medical supplies, and training healthcare professionals to handle emergencies efficiently.

Their proposed measures reflect a clear understanding of the challenges we face and a commitment to proactive, effective governance.

Citizens deserve leaders who can see the problems clearly and take swift, effective action to address them. It is time for a change in leadership to one that prioritises the well-being and safety of all of the people.
