Overview
Mary McLeod Bethune established the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) on December 5, 1935. With the support of several African-American women’s organizations, the NCNW’s mission was to unify African-American women to improve race relations in the United States and abroad.
Background
Despite strides made by African-American artists and writers of the Harlem Renaissance, W.E.B. Du Bois’ vision of an end to racism was not during the 1920s.
As Americans—especially African-Americans--suffered during the Great Depression, Bethune began to think that a unified group of organizations could lobby effectively for an end to segregation and discrimination. Activist Mary Church Terrell suggested that Bethune form a council to help in these efforts. And the NCNW, “a national organization of national organizations” was established. With a vision of “Unity of Purpose and a Unity of Action,” Bethune efficiently organized a group of independent organizations to improve the lives of African-American women.
The Great Depression: Finding Resources and Advocacy
From the outset, NCNW officials focused on creating relationships with other organizations and federal agencies. NCNW began sponsoring educational programs. In 1938, the NCNW held the White House Conference on Governmental Cooperation in the Approach to the Problems of Negro Women and Children.
Through this conference, the NCNW was able to lobby for more African-American women to hold upper-level government administrative positions.
World War II: Desegregating the Military
During World War II, the NCNW joined forces with other civil rights organizations such as the NAACP to lobby for the desegregation of the U.S. Army.
The group also worked to help women internationally. In 1941, the NCNW became a member of the U.S. War Department’s Bureau of Public Relations. Working in the Women’s Interest Section, the organization campaigned for African-American to serve in the U.S. Army.
The lobbying efforts paid off. Within one year, The Women’s Army Corps (WAC ) began
BY MUNYARADZI MADZOKERE FORMER Young Warriors utility player Miguel Lemming (pictured) has committed to helping local female footballers get scholarships to study and play the game in the United States through his organisation Ten Toes Africa. Ten Toes Africa is currently basking in the glory of having already helped two national team players Vanessa Mateko and Beata Chako who are already in the US. Chako left the country only last week on a four-year university scholarship at Brewton-Parker College in Georgia where her compatriot is also based. “It is an honour and priviledge for Ten Toes to help the women of Zimbabwe excel and if they advance from Under-17 to Under-23 (stages) to national team, any part we can play in that progress to represent our country’s flag is so important,” the former Arcadia United star told NewsDay Sport from the US. “The benefit of having education as a primary piece of that is that once soccer is done, these children are empowered to impact local communities, regional communities and globally. The ambassadorship of our kids coming here to America is huge,” Lemming said. “American kids can then better understand Zimbabwe and the rich resources we have, so it’s important to have these international exchange of students to further our global reach and have these children advance their education in the United States. “They can bring that knowledge to Zimbabwe if at all possible and along with that bring some friends with them to come and advance our tourism,” he added. A promising player in his time, Lemming left the country for the United States as a 23-year-old in 2001 where he continued his football career at Palm Beach Atlantic University. Lemming had a lot of praise for sponsors of the initiative such as Chris Miles, Mike Delug, Matt and Chris Grecco and Alex Wakefield, the chief executive of Longbow Advantage, among others. Wakefield declared unwavering support toward the Ten Toes Africa initiative. “Collegiate athletics are an invaluable way for young women to learn teamwork, dedication and leadership. Providing young women the opportunity to share their talents with a college community while they are able to get a top education benefits everyone. We are proud sponsors of Ten Toes, and we look forward to seeing the successes of all the athletes,” Wakefield said. Lemming also made special mention of Ten Toes Africa regional technical director Allan Johnson who has played for the Warriors in the past, Gladman Dimbiri of Maningi Queens FC and former Warriors coach Charles Mhlauri. According to Lemming, former West Bromwich Albion is the brains behind the idea of investing in girls.

By NQOBANI NDLOVU THE National Patriotic Front (NPF), a breakaway party from the ruling Zanu PF party, has announced that it will participate in all the by-elections should their suspension over COVID-19 be lifted and that it will use young people to spearhead its campaign. This comes after NPF lost its sole seat in Parliament which was occupied by the late Kwekwe Central MP Masango Matambanadzo, who died this year. Government suspended the holding of by-elections scheduled for December 5, citing COVID-19 as the hindrance, although the World Health Organisation announced that elections could still be held in the midst of the pandemic. More than 35 seats became vacant in the National Assembly after the Thokozani Khupe-led MDC-T recalled 32 MDC Alliance MPs. There are also three seats that need to be filled after the death of MPs that include Matambanadzo. The NPF is made up of former Zanu PF members, former National Youth Service (NYS) graduates, particularly G40 members, who were angling for the presidency before their leaders were forced to flee the country after the November 2017 military coup. NPF Bulawayo provincial political commissar Andifasi Banda said the political outfit, whose interim leader is former Bulawayo Provincial Affairs minister Eunice Sandi-Moyo, wanted to participate in all the by-elections. “There was little movement in our restructuring exercise owing to the COVID-19 lockdown restrictions, however, we are glad to announce that we are now busy carrying out the much important exercise in time for the by-elections,” Banda said. “We have to and we want to participate in all these by-elections,” he said. Banda said the NPF had a youth brigade called the Zimbabwe National Youth Service Graduates Association which co-ordinates the opposition party’s campaigns. The NYS programme, launched by the late Youth minister Border Gezi in 2001, was introduced with the aim of drilling revolutionary and patriotic ideologies into the country’s young citizens. But Zanu PF was later accused of turning the graduates into a youth militia to harass political opponents. The programme never had an easy existence as it came under a barrage of attacks with some questioning why children of top government officials never enrolled at the institutions, while others condemned it as a government initiative to brainwash youths and use them for political expediency.
