Nationwide protests have taken place since October 7 despite the disbanding of the controversial Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) police unit.

The demonstrators have been accused of attacking police stations and personnel.

The rallies which are mostly attended by young people have become avenues to vent against corruption and unemployment.

Rights groups say at least 15 people have been killed the demonstrations began in early October.

PLUMTREE border touts, popularly known as amagumaguma, have turned a school in Nxele along the border with Botswana into a base for criminal activities, a situation which has riled villagers.

This was revealed by Bulilima West legislator Dingimuzi Phuti at a meeting with traditional and community leadership at Ezimnyama business centre yesterday held to review progress on the construction of Ezimnyama Clinic, which was mooted 67 years ago.

The gangs reportedly broke into Nxele Primary School and are using the premises for criminal activities to the chagrin of locals.

He said the major challenge was that of amagumaguma who were vandalising the buildings and using the structures as their hideout for criminal activities.

It could not be a school where criminals are based and teachers and pupils will teach and learn in intimidating environment,” the legislator said.

Guarded by a heavy police presence, Ivory Coast's electoral commission has started to announce the preliminary result of the presidential vote.

With 2 of the four candidates boycotting, incumbent President Allassane Ouattara is expected to win, especially in the north of the country.

The area is known for being a stronghold of the president.

According to the first results, President Ouattara obtained 98% of the votes in Korhogo the northern capital, with an 88% participation.

Ouattara's opponents keep claiming his bid for a third term was unconstitutional, and say the vote which, according to them, is an attempt at a \"coup d'etat\", was a failure.

Through FPI's leader Pascal Affi N'Guessan, opposition leaders called for a civil transition on Sunday, and once more stated they no longer recognized Alassane Ouattara as the Ivory Coast's president.

The RHDP ruling party has meanwhile \"warned\" the opposition \"against any attempt at destabilization\".

George Floyd was fondly remembered Tuesday as “Big Floyd” _ a father and brother, athlete and neighborhood mentor, and now a catalyst for change _ at a funeral for the black man whose death has sparked a global reckoning over police brutality and racial prejudice.

More than 500 mourners wearing masks against the coronavirus packed a Houston church a little more than two weeks after Floyd was pinned to the pavement by a white Minneapolis police officer who put a knee on his neck for what prosecutors said was 8 minutes and 46 seconds.

“I don’t want to see any black man, any man, but most definitely not a black man sitting on the ground in the hands of bad police,“ said Marcus Brooks, 47, who set up a tent with other graduates of Jack Yates High School, Floyd’s alma mater.

In the past two weeks, amid the furor over Floyd’s death, sweeping and previously unthinkable things have taken place: Confederate statues have been toppled, and many cities are debating overhauling, dismantling or cutting funding for police departments.

“The president talks about bringing in the military, but he did not say one word about 8 minutes and 46 seconds of police murder of George Floyd,“ said the Rev. Al Sharpton, the civil rights activist.

Many were waiting for Ivorian opposition leader Henri Konan Bédié to speak, but instead it was FPI's P ascal Affi N'guessan who spoke for the opposition parties.

N'guessan confirmed they rejected the October 31st vote , and stated once more the opposition no longer recognized Alassane Ouattara as the country's president.

\" The Ivorian opposition political parties do not recognize the election of october 31st 2020. They note the end of president Ouattara's mandate as of October 31st 2020, and call on the international community to duly record it.\"

\"Therefore, the Ivorian opposition political parties demand the opening of a civilian transition, in order to create conditions for a just, transparant and inclusive presidential election \" N'guessan said.

Affi N'gessan also called for a transitional government to be instaured shortly with all opposition forces.

In the meantime, partial results have arrived at the electoral commission , which, department after department, continues to gather reports.

\" The key point tonight remains the turnout rate of this vote . This is what everyone is waiting for \" added Africanews' Abidjan correspondant Yannick Djahoun.

Opposition candidates in the Ivory Coast on Sunday called for a \"civil transition\" from incumbent President Alassane Ouattara's government, a day after the election.

Presidential hopefuls Pascal Affi N'Guessan and Henri Konan Bédié called for a boycott of the vote, saying it was \"unconstitutional\" for Ouattara to run for a third term.

N'Guessan said it was the \"end\" of Ouattara's mandate.

\"Opposition political parties and groups call for the opening of a civil transition to create the conditions for a fair, transparent, and inclusive presidential election,\" he said.

Deadly clashes erupted in Ivory Coast in August when Ouattara said a reform allowed him to reset a two-term presidential limit to run again, angering the opposition who called it an \"electoral coup\".

At least 30 people were killed in the pre-election violence, reviving fears of the 2010 vote which sparked a civil war that saw over 3,000 deaths.

Ouattara originally said he would step down and hand over the reins to the younger generation. But the sudden death of his chosen successor in July forced a change in his plans.

Votes are currently being counted from more than 20,000 polling stations and the result, by law, should be released in five days.

Numbers for voter turnout are yet to be released.

But Africanews' Yannick Djanhoun in Abidjan said some offices were not even able to open their doors to voters.
