Roy DeCarava: Great American Artist and Photographer of Harlem, New York
Roy DeCarava was one of the greatest artists and photographers during the Harlem Renaissance.
DeCarava and a friend decided to transfer to the main school as the only black students.
At the institution, DeCarava was able to study art history and was introduced to the works of Vincent Van Gogh, Leonardo da Vinci, and Van Gogh.
DeCarava shot and developed many pictures after winning a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1952, the first awarded to an African-American photographer.
Decarava’s work included shooting the laborers in New York’s garment district and civil rights protests, freedom marchers in Washington, D.C., and other moments in eastern America.
