Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot set off a firestorm recently when she decided to give reporters of color priority access for one on one interviews as she marked her second year in office--a true break from the nation’s media norm. Journalism has long grappled with lack of racial diversity. More than 75% of newsroom employees are White, according to a 2018 Pew Research Center analysis of Census data. In turn, reporters of color note they're often shut out when scoring high-profile interviews.
