THE EDITOR: Not for the first time I am calling on the relevant authorities to rename Oxford Street Kwame Ture Street.
Ture should be celebrated as a national hero.
Ture was banned from TT by then PM Eric Williams. All that is in the past now.
Kwame Ture was born Stokely Carmichael in TT. He migrated to the US at age 11. He was a member of the Black Panther Party.
The upcoming public lecture series is to help TT, and the world by extension, comprehend why it is important to keep alive the knowledge and information about Pan Africanism, which speaks to the African identity and other activists like Ture.
Ture put it best when he said:
* The first need of a free people is to define their own terms.
* The secret of this life is to have no fear, it is the only way to function.
* My grandfather had to run. My generation is out of breath. We are not running any more.
Basdeo Panday in his wisdom allowed Ture back into the country.
To the powers that be, do what is what right because it is right. Rename Oxford Street Kwame Ture Street now.
