[allAfrica] Nairobi -- The dusty road leading to the heart of the Mathare settlement in Nairobi's north-west corner passes metal-roofed homes that seem to spill down hillsides, packed closely together. On a recent Monday morning, the road is packed with noisy children. They pass a partially water-logged open field where a team of youngsters are playing football (soccer), as more children cheer them from the sidelines.

By ANDREW TAYLOR Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Joe Biden feels at home on Capitol Hill, but the place sure has changed since he left. The clubby atmosphere that Biden knew so well during his 36-year Senate career is gone, probably forever. Deal-makers are hard to find. And the election results haven't dealt him a strong hand to pursue his legislative agenda, with Democrats' poor performance in down-ballot races likely leaving them without control of Congress. The dynamic leaves Biden with little choice but to try to govern from the vanishing middle of a Washington that's been badly ruptured […]

By BEN FOX and ELLIOT SPAGAT Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — Some dramatic moves on immigration are expected in the early days of the Biden administration. Joe Biden will likely use executive orders to reverse some of President Donald Trump's most controversial actions, rolling back moves that were a central feature of his administration and important to his base. The Biden administration plans to restore protection for people brought to the U.S. illegally as minors and stop using Pentagon funds to build a border wall. Biden unveiled a detailed, highly ambitious plan on immigration, but it will take time to […]

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo refused to answer a question over whether or not the US State Department was standing in the way of a succesful transition by the incoming administration of President-elect Joe Biden.
On Tuesday, he told reporters that the \"transition\" to a second Trump term would be \"smooth,\" but later said the State Department was prepared for any eventuality.
A week after losing the US election, President Trump remained shut up in the White House on Tuesday, pushing an alternate reality that he is about to win and blocking Democrat Joe Biden's ability to prepare the transition.
The outgoing President has refused to concede to his opponent. President Trump has however mounted a string of flimsy court challenges in states where Biden won.
Several suits have been thrown out almost immediately and the remainder clearly have no chance of overturning Biden's slim but convincing victories in multiple states.
Donald Trump's attempt to hold on to power has become all consuming for a man who often makes a point of publicly mocking rivals as \"losers.\"
Since Election Day on November 3, he has made few public appearances and seems to have all but shelved normal presidential duties.
Three Durban cops who allegedly extorted a Phoenix man of money and cigarettes at his home have appeared in court, police said.
