Quartermiler St Hillaire vies for World Champs medal on Sunday - Trinidad and Tobago Newsday

DWIGHT ST Hillaire continues Trinidad and Tobago’s quest for its first 2022 World Athletics Championships medal when he lines up in the men’s 400 metres heats on Sunday from 2.05 pm (TT time).

At Hayward Field track and field stadium in Eugene, Oregon, the 24-year-old St Hillaire vies for a spot in Wednesday’s semi-final when he lines up in lane four of heat four.

He competes alongside Italian David Re, an Olympic Games finalist, in lane three and five-time Serbian national champion Bosko Kijanovic in lane five.

Additionally, if TT sprinter Michelle-Lee Ahye was successful in her women’s 100m heat six qualifier on Saturday night, she would also face the starter in the semi-final from 2.33 pm on Sunday.

On Friday however, TT athletes Jerod Elcock and Portious Warren were eliminated in their respective first round qualifiers on day one.

Competing in heat two of seven in the men’s 100m, Elcock finished sixth in 10.22 seconds. He was the 34th fastest finisher in the heats and did not make the cut for the 24 advancing semi-finallists.

On Monday, Jereem ‘The Dream’ Richards and Eric Harrison are scheduled to contest the men’s 200m heats.

And on Thursday, TT double-Olympic medallist Keshorn Walcott gets begins his campaign in the men’s javelin qualifying round.

Next Saturday, Tyra Gittens starts women’s long jump qualification while the men’s 4x400m team of St. Hillaire, Richards, Asa Guevara, Shakeem McKay and Kashief King also open their campaign.
