BY MIRIAM MANGWAYA SUSPENDED Zimbabwe Miners Federation (ZMF) Henrietta Rushwaya and his four accomplices in the gold smuggling case have put the State on notice that they will challenge their placement on remand if it fails to provide a trial date on January 8, 2021. Rushwaya is being jointly charged with Pakistani businessman Ali Muhammad, Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) operatives Stephen Tserayi and Raphios Mufandauya and her ZMF colleague Gift Karanda on smuggling charges, illegal possession of gold, criminal abuse of office and defeating the course of justice. Rushwaya has another separate case in which she is being accused of attempting to bribe a police officer when she was arrested on gold smuggling. The five are being accused of attempting to smuggle 6kg of gold worth US$333 000 out of the country before they were caught at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport. Representing the State, prosecutor Charles Muchemwa said investigations on the case were still underway and were expected to be complete by January 8, next year The accused persons, through their lawyers, submitted before magistrate Ngoni Nduna yesterday that they will challenge further remand if they were not provided with a trial date on their next appearance in court. Rushwaya, Tserayi, Mufandauya and Karanda are in custody after they were denied bail by Nduna. Muhammad was released on $100 000 bail. They appealed against the ruling at the High Court. In her bail appeal submissions at the High Court, Rushwaya represented by lawyer Tapson Dzvetero, submitted that she was a suitable candidate for bail, arguing that Nduna's conclusion that she had connections abroad was based on speculation as there was no evidence to support it. CIO operative Mufandauya through his lawyer Joshua Chirambwe, also challenged the lower court ruling, arguing that the magistrate had adopted a selective approach in the bail proceedings when he granted Muhammad bail on the basis that he had been exonerated by Rushwaya, who on the same statement, had also exonerated Mufandauya. He submitted that by that decision he was denied his right of equal treatment before the law.

BY KENNETH NYANGANI IN a tragic incident that has left the whole community shell-shocked, three Buhera villagers including mother and baby, drowned while attempting to cross a flooded river in Buhera on Wednesday. Manicaland police spokesperson inspector Tavhiringwa Kakohwa confirmed the incident to NewsDay yesterday saying the three drowned in Chief Nyashanu’s area. He said Lucia Dune of Mazakwata village who had her nine year old baby on her back drowned in Murambwe river on December 5 while another villager William Mundwa (47) drowned in the same river the following day. Kakohwa said Dune was coming from Chisora village on December 5, where she had gone to buy some mango fruits in the company of two male juveniles. Dune who had a baby strapped on her back attempted to cross the flooded river in the morning and was swept away. The two other were villagers Dune had called for assistance. Dune’s body was retrieved the following day while the baby is yet to be found. “Dune was coming from Chisora village on December 5 where she had gone to buy mango fruits in the company of two male juveniles. Dune, who had a baby strapped on her back, attempted to cross the river but they were swept away. The other two villagers she was with called out for assistance but it was too late as the two had already drowned. Dune’s body was found in the river the next day and the body of the baby is yet to be found,” Kakohwa said. Kakohwa also said Mundwa drowned while assisting fellow villager’s to cross the river and had just successfully helped one villager to cross when the raging waters swept him off. Kakohwa urged people to desist from crossing flooded rivers or to play near water bodies.

Zama Mafu, allegedly beheaded his wife with an axe on Wednesday after finding her having sexual intercourse with one of the local herdman from the area. According to a close family member who narrated the tragic event on condition of anonymity, Mafu was greatly distressed after finding one of his wives intimate with a herdman. “This did not go well with Mafu because he failed to control his temper and murdered his wife with an axe,” a family source said. “Mafu was practicing polygamy and he built one of his homesteads in Dekezi a place commonly known as Nyoni. I really do not know what prompted him to do such a horrific act in our area. He was always sober-minded and rational,” one of his friends who identified himself as Xolani said. It is alleged that after Mafu beheaded his wife with an axe, he committed suicide by drinking cattle dip. Egypt has received its first shipment of a Chinese coronavirus vaccine, which was tested in the United Arab Emirates and is said to be 86% effective.
The shipment from Chinese state-owned pharmaceutical giant Sinopharm landed at Cairo's international airport from the UAE late on Thursday.
Health minister Hala Zayed and diplomats from China and the UAE were at the airport to greet the shipment.

The positive cases were confirmed after up to 100 players and support staff members were tested for the coronavirus during a screening exercise conducted before they could enter into a bio-secure bubble set up for the first-class tournament. All the five infected individuals are not showing any symptoms and have since been isolated, with the ZC medical team constantly monitoring them. Having set up the bio-secure bubble as part of stringent measures aimed at greatly minimising the risk of players and support staff contracting COVID-19, ZC is expecting all its domestic competitions to be played and completed in a safe environment without any disruptions. Logan Cup matches that started today with Mountaineers facing Eagles at Harare Sports Club and Tuskers taking on Rhinos at Old Hararians Sports Club marked the beginning of the 2020/21 season. The five provincial teams taking part in the first-class championship, including Southern Rocks, are all staying at a strictly controlled accommodation facility in the capital.
