Next, he appeared in the film “The Fifth Element” starring Bruce Willis, Gary Oldman, and Milla Jovovich and directed by Luc Besson. It was a science fiction film based in the 23rd century. The film garnered $263 million at the box office and received generally positive reviews. He next moved on to partner with Brett Ratner again for the series of “Rush Hour” movies between 1998 and 2007. He starred alongside martial arts star Jackie Chan for the series. The film was a martial arts comedy in which Tucker played the role of Detective James Carter. The films were very well received at the box office, and after the phenomenal success of the first film, Tucker held out for a $20 million salary

The Color Purple is a 1985 American period drama film directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Menno Meyjes, based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name by Alice Walker. It was Spielbergs eighth film as a director, and was a change from the summer blockbusters for which he had become famous. The film was also the first feature-length film directed by Spielberg for which John Williams did not compose the music. The film starred Danny Glover, Desreta Jackson, Margaret Avery, Oprah Winfrey (in her film debut), Adolph Caesar, Rae Dawn Chong, and featured Whoopi Goldberg (also in her film debut) as Celie Harris-Johnson.

Filmed in Anson and Union counties in North Carolina,[2] the film tells the story of a young African American girl named Celie Harris and shows the problems African American women faced during the early 20th century, including domestic violence, incest, pedophilia, poverty, racism, and sexism. Celie is transformed as she finds her self-worth through the help of two strong female companions.[3]

Set in rural Georgia during the first 40 years of the twentieth century, the film centers on the life of a fictional character named Celie, an oppressed black woman. In the film, Celie endures rape, sexism, the loss of her children at birth, a tyrannical husband, domestic violence, chauvinism, the loss of her sister, and the demoralization of her friend (Sofia), who also loses her freedom to the law. Celie and the other characters tell a story of overcoming racism and misogyny in the rural south during this time period, depicting a struggle for equality. Celie maintains her resolve throughout the story. By the end of the film, the characters have undergone remarkable changes and relationships have begun to heal.[4] [5] [6]

The film received positive reviews from critics, receiving praise for its acting, direction, screenplay, score, and production merits, but was criticized by some for being over-sentimental and stereotypical. Rotten Tomatoes gives the film a score of 88% based on

Ice Cube is an American rapper, actor, and film and music producer. He was born O’Shea Jackson on June 15, 1969 in Los Angeles to a hospital clerk named Doris Jackson and a university groundskeeper Hosea Jackson. He first started rapping in high school, and then attended the Phoenix Institute of Technology in 1987, where he studied architectural drafting for two years. He first formed a group called C.I.A. with some friends. The group performed at a party hosted by Andre Romelle Young, better known as Dr. Dre. Dre was impressed with Ice Cube’s tunes and the two teamed up with fellow musicians DJ Yella, Eazy-E and MC Ren to form the rap group N.W.A. (short for Niggaz With Attitude).

Ice Cube released the album “Straight Outta Compton” with the group in 1988. Their music came to be known as gangsta rap, with explicit and violent lyrics, which brought them into conflict with various law enforcement agencies, censors and concerned parents. They even received a written warning from the assistant director of the FBI, but this only enhanced their notoriety. The album was one of the first to contain the label of “Parental Advisory” content and they received very little airtime on TV, yet their album went double platinum because of hordes of fans flocking to their performances.

Ice Cube left the group in December 1989 over royalty issues, as he had written a large number of the songs but felt he wasn’t fairly compensated. The remaining band members released their next album titled “100 Miles And Runnin” which included songs targeting Ice Cube for cowardice and lack of originality. He was unfazed by the criticism and released his solo debut album titled “AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted” in May 1990. The album was an immediate success, although rife with controversy for misogynistic and racist lyrics. He then helped to produce the female rapper Yo-Yo’s debut album titled “Make Way for the Motherlode”.

His second album, titled “Death Certificate” was released in 1991. It was also very successful and equally controversial because

In the late evening of May 1st, Douglas Lewis was killed after he was shot four times by Watertown resident Anthony Trifiletti after a minor traffic accident.

Trifiletti, who was licensed to carry a firearm, told authorities that he shot Lewis — who was unarmed — because he feared for his life.

Lewis pulled over and Trifiletti pulled over behind him and when Lewis got out of his car, presumably to ask why the 25-year old was following him, the shooter claimed he saw Lewis reaching under his shirt.

Valerie Lewis said a witness to the shooting told her that Trifiletti took a shooter’s stance, aimed, and fired his weapon, “like he was a professional.”

However, the killer has had contacts with police including a DWI and he was involved in a traffic accident that caused the death of another motorist about a year ago.The mother of the accident victim, Karen Malave, was in court showing support for the Lewis family.

PRIME Minister Andrew Holness was among Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) officials who paid tribute to former mayor of May Pen Milton Brown, who died peacefully yesterday.

A highly respected politician at the local government level, Brown had been councillor for the Mineral Heights Division since 1998, and mayor of May Pen between 2003 and 2012.

Recently elected Member of Parliament for Clarendon South Eastern, which also includes Mineral Heights, Pearnel Charles Jr, said he felt “great sadness” in confirming Brown's death.

We take comfort in knowing Councillor Brown lived a full life and made impacting contributions to his family, friends, South East Clarendon, and the Jamaica Labour Party,” he said.

“We are grateful for the time he gave us and for all the sweat and effort he put into the development of South East Clarendon, the entire parish, the Jamaica Labour Party, and the people of Jamaica.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The three other officers on the scene when a member of the Minneapolis police force pressed his knee on George Floyd’s neck are being charged with aiding and abetting a murder, and the murder case against the main officer is being upgraded to second-degree, a newspaper reported Wednesday.

The Star Tribune, citing multiple unnamed law enforcement sources, said Derek Chauvin would face the more serious charge in the death of George Floyd, who was handcuffed on the ground.

Three other officers at the scene — Thomas Lane, J. Kueng and Tou Thao — were charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder, the newspaper reported, again citing sources who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Some of the rockiness of the days since Floyd’s death May 25 dissipated on Tuesday night, with demonstrations continuing around the country, but without major reports of violence.

New York police said they arrested about 280 people on protest-related charges Tuesday night, compared with 700 a day earlier.

Fruitvale Station is a 2013 American biographical drama film written and directed by Ryan Coogler. It is Cooglers first feature-length film and is based on the events leading to the death of Oscar Grant, a young man who was killed in 2009 by BART police officer Johannes Mehserle at the Fruitvale district station of the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system in Oakland.

The film stars Michael B. Jordan as Oscar Grant. Forest Whitaker is one of the films producers.[4] Kevin Durand and Chad Michael Murray play the two BART police officers involved in Grants death. The names of the officers were changed for the film.[5]

Fruitvale Station debuted at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award for U.S. dramatic film.[4] It was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival where it won the award for Best First Film. The film was released in theaters July 12, 2013.[6] It received critical acclaim upon its release and earned other awards.

The film depicts the story of Oscar Grant III, a 22-year-old from Hayward, California, and his experiences on the last day of his life, before he was fatally shot by BART Police in the early morning hours of New Years Day 2009. The movie begins with the actual footage of Oscar Grant and his friends being detained by the BART Police at the Fruitvale BART station in Oakland on January 1, 2009 at 2:15am right before the killing.

The film shows scenes of him and his girlfriend arguing about Grants recent infidelity. It later shows Grant unsuccessfully attempting to get his job back at the grocery store. He briefly considers selling some marijuana but in the end decides to dump the stash. Grant later attends a birthday party for his mother and tells her afterward that he will take the BART train to see fireworks and other New Years festivities in San Francisco.

Amy Klobuchar was among the chorus of voices demanding justice for the unarmed Black man who a Minneapolis police officer appears to kill on a video that went viral shortly after the incident on Monday.

An Associated Press investigation into Burrell’s case determined that his conviction was “flawed,” causing a number of groups, including the Minneapolis NAACP, to demand Klobuchar suspend her presidential campaign, which she did end in March.

On top of that, a report from Minnesota Public (MPR) radio published last year claimed that Klobuchar “didn’t prosecute controversial police killings or brutality cases as a county prosecutor.”

The MPR report cited on instance when the “mother of a black teenager who was shot and killed by police in 2004 begged Klobuchar to file charges against the officer instead of presenting the case to a grand jury.”

However, the Washington Post found those claims to be faulty because of incorrect data compiled by the Vera Institute of Justice, which ultimately admitted that “no meaningful statements about the number of black people in jail in Hennepin County can be made for the time Klobuchar was DA.”

WASHINGTON (AP) — Scott Nichols, a balloon artist, was riding home on his scooter from the protests engulfing Minneapolis last weekend when he was struck by a rubber bullet fired from a cluster of police officers in riot gear.

President Donald Trump has characterized those clashing with law enforcement after George Floyd’s death under the knee of a Minneapolis police officer as organized, radical-left thugs engaging in domestic terrorism, an assertion repeated by Attorney General William Barr.

The Associated Press analyzed court records, employment histories, social media posts and other sources of information for 217 people arrested last weekend in Minneapolis and the District of Columbia, two cities at the epicenter of the protests across the United States.

The following day, the assessment noted “several uncorroborated reports of bricks being pre-staged at planned protest venues PRESS

Law enforcement officers stand in formation along Lake Street near Hiawatha Ave. as fires burned after a night of unrest and protests in the death of George Floyd early Friday, May 29, 2020 in Minneapolis.

AP filed public records requests seeking arrest reports and other documents that might show what evidence law enforcement officers have against Nichols, Ortiz the Cooks and others arrested in Minneapolis.

By Rochelle Olson and Chao Xiong Star Tribune – Two national civil rights leaders visited south Minneapolis on Thursday for separate events but identical demands for the speedy charging and arrest of four Minneapolis police officers involved in death of George Floyd.

Sharpton was accompanied to the corner where Floyd was killed by Gwen Carr, the mother of Eric Garner, who was killed by New York City police in 2014.

Sharpton called on people to demonstrate Saturday across the country as part of the “We Can’t Breathe” movement, echoing the words both Garner and Floyd said to police before their deaths.

Sharpton said he and Carr would be with supporters at the scene of Garner’s death in New York “to link with those here in Minneapolis and around the country.”

Sharpton vowed to return for Floyd’s memorial service and “over and over again” until “we get justice” Carr recounted her five-year fight to get the officer who killed her son fired.

An American actor, film producer, and director, Lee Louis Daniels was born on December 24, 1959. He is credited with directing some of the most controversial, yet memorable films of the last decade including hisdirectorial debut in 2004’s The Woodsman and 2006’s Shadowboxer.  He also produced both films.

Theoldest child born to William and Clara Daniels, he and his four siblings were reared in West Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He and his father shared a love for books and poetry, though William Daniels did not want his son to pursue writing as a career. Moreover, early signs ofhomosexuality in young Daniels incensed his dad, leading to physical abuse. The patriarch of the family was a law officer and was killed in the line of duty in 1972, forcing his mother to raise her children as a single mother.

Daniels graduated from Radnor High school in 1978and studied liberal arts at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri. He left before graduating and relocated to Los Angeles where he worked for a health care agency. A short time later he started his own nursing placement agency, landing a number of important clients thatincluded the fledgling AIDS Project Los Angeles. He later sold the agency in 1981 for approximately $2 million and launched his career in entertainment.

Daniels began his Hollywood career as a productionassistant and later a casting director.  Eventually, his path led him to work on notable projects including Princes Purple Rain (1984) and Under the Cherry Moon(1986). Frustrated by the lack of meaningful roles for African Americanactors, he founded Lee Daniels Entertainment in 2004. His clientele grew to include such notables as Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Morgan Freeman and eventually non-black actors such as Hilary Swank.

In 2004, former President Bill Clinton persuaded Daniels to produce a series of public service announcements aimed at young people of color to encouragethem to vote. Daniels, in turn, enlisted LL Cool J and Alicia Keys in the successful project.

Famous for his uncompromising
