THE police are urging the public to be mindful when using social media (Facebook, Instagram, X formerly Twitter) and dating apps (Tinder, Bumble, Grindr), saying criminals have begun targeting victims using these platforms.
"We urge the public to exercise extreme caution when arranging and attending in-person meetings with individuals met online," said a release on July 30.
It also said police data shows criminals are using social media and dating apps to commit various crimes such as theft, assault and other violent acts.
"These platforms are being easily exploited by individuals with criminal intent."
As a result, the police said, "It is essential for all users to be vigilant and take necessary precautions."
Police tips:
Be aware of fake profiles as they may contain limited photographs and information. These accounts may not show a true picture.
Verify their identity before meeting in person through video calls or social media profiles. Always look for consistencies in their information and be cautious of those who avoid this step.
Be careful where you meet. Avoid lonely areas or crime "hotspots." Criminals will draw victims to these areas to facilitate robberies and even sexual assault.
Meet in public places that are well-populated and avoid lonely areas.
Use your own transport to and from the agreed meeting place. This ensures you can leave when you want.
Stay sober and alert as alcohol can impair your judgement. Avoid drinking excessive alcohol or taking drugs during any meeting, as this can make you a vulnerable target.
Trust your instincts and do no dismiss your gut feeling. If something feels off or you feel a "bad vibe," leave immediately and seek help if necessary.
Keep your personal information such as your address, workplace and financial details private. These should never be shared with someone you just met online.
The release said, "The TTPS remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens.
"We continue to work diligently to identify and apprehend those responsible for these crimes."
The police encouraged the public to report any suspicious activity or individuals to the nearest police station and advised them to follow the precautions.
