Peter Mukhito dares Peter Mutharika critics

DPP TORCHBEARER—Mutharika

By Grecium Gama:

Opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) secretary general Peter Mukhito has challenged critics of the party’s leader, Peter Mutharika, to present a stronger candidate instead of attacking his age.

Speaking on Times Radio in the inaugural ‘Kodi Mulimba?’ programme, which first aired yesterday and will be airing every Thursday, Mukhito said those who claim that Mutharika is too old for the presidency should stop complaining and bring forward someone who can defeat him.

“If they think Mutharika is too old, they should stop making noise and bring someone who can compete. Some of these youths [who are] being pushed have already failed to lead this country,” he said.

Mukhito insisted that Mutharika still commands strong support among Malawians and that he would be welcomed back if he runs for president again in 2025.

“I have no doubt that people still want Mutharika. Wherever he goes, the response speaks for itself,” Mukhito said.

But political analysts say Mutharika’s return could backfire.

For example, analyst Victor Chipofya said while the former State president still has influence among some segments of the society, he could not appeal to younger voters.

“DPP needs new energy. Holding on to Mutharika might weaken their chances of winning the presidential election in 2025,” Chipofya said.

Mutharika ruled Malawi from 2014 to 2020 before losing power in the June 23, 2020 court-ordered presidential election.

DPP is yet to officially name its candidate.
