Patient West Indies in control against Bangladesh - Trinidad and Tobago Newsday

A PATIENT batting display by West Indies put the regional team in control of the opening Test match against Bangladesh at the close of day one, on Thursday.

West Indies were 95/2 at stumps at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound, Antigua in their first innings and only trail Bangladesh by eight runs. Bangladesh were dismissed for a dismal 103 batting first.

West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite ended the opening day on 42 not out off 149 balls and Nkrumah Bonner is unbeaten on 12 off 43 deliveries. Opener John Campbell did not play with his usual aggression, scoring 24 off 72 balls before being dismissed. Raymon Reifer was the other Windies batsman sent back to the pavilion for 11 off 26 deliveries.

Mustafizur Rahman (1/10) and Ebadot Hossain (1/18) took one wicket apiece.

The West Indies fast bowlers destroyed the Bangladesh batting in the first half of the day.

Pacers Jayden Seales and Alzarri Joseph grabbed three wickets each to help West Indies make a dream start in the two-match series.

Seales ended with 3/33 in ten overs and Joseph, playing at home, grabbed 3/33 in 8.5 overs.

Experienced fast bowler Kemar Roach, who was included in the squad, on Wednesday, after recovering from an injury, snatched 2/21 in eight overs.

Roach did the damage early on taking the first two wickets.

Medium-pacer Kyle Mayers also caused problems for the Bangladesh batsmen with 2/10 in five overs.

Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan attacked the Windies bowlers with a knock of 51 off 67 balls which included six fours and one six.

Opener Tamim Iqbal struck 29.

The match continues at 10 am, on Friday.
