A former murder accused who spent a decade on remand although there was evidence that could prove his innocence, said on Thursday that justice had not been fully served despite a High Court awarding him $1.8 million for the state’s breach of his constitutional rights.Frank Gibson asserted there was “no real justice in Barbados” after Madam Justice Pamela Beckles ruled that monetary damages – $1 719 500 in non-pecuniary loss and a $100 000 vindicatory award – be paid to him “in order to maintain the integrity of our justice system”.She found that Gibson’s rights to liberty, protection of the law and to have a fair trial within a reasonable time were infringed and declared that it was appalling that despite the discovery of evidence six months into his remand that could have cleared him, he remained in prison for an additional nine years. The judge said the award was, therefore, “appropriate”.
