Researchers from the College of Charleston’s School of Business and Lander University’s College of Business are currently studying the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on restaurant owners and operators in South Carolina.

The research aims to explore current economic situations and perceptions regarding COVID-19.

They also hope to find out if owners are able to maintain their businesses for both the short term and long term under current and future social distancing guidelines and regulations.

Restaurant owners and operators may take the short, 20-question survey before June 15, 2020.

The researchers plan to present their findings in the next 60 days.

The police department in the US city of Minneapolis will be dismantled and rebuilt, city councillors said late Sunday, after the death in custody of George Floyd sparked nationwide protests about racism in law enforcement.

Council Member Alondra Cano tweeted that the decision came through \"a veto-proof majority of the MPLS City Council,\" which agreed that the police department \"is not reformable and that we're going to end the current policing system.\"

A white Minneapolis police officer has been charged with murder in the May 25 death of George Floyd, after bystander video showed the officer's knee pinned on Floyd's neck for nearly nine minutes while he pleaded for his life and called for his mother.

Last year, a black former Minneapolis police officer was sentenced to 12 years and six months in prison for the fatal shooting of an unarmed white Australian woman trying to report a crime.

Bender told CNN she was looking to shift police funding toward community-based strategies, and that the city council would discuss how to replace the current police department.

(Reuters) - Facebook Inc’s chief of advertising integrity, who handled the company’s ad products around sensitive subjects such as politics and coronavirus misinformation, departed this week, according to an internal company post viewed by Reuters on Friday. Rob Leathern, director of product management, said earlier this month on Facebook’s internal network that he would be leaving the company on Dec. 30. His exit had not been previously reported. Facebook could not immediately be reached for comment. Leathern said in the post that he was “leaving Facebook to work on consumer privacy beyond just ads and social media,” without disclosing where he was headed. Leathern was often the public face of the company’s controversial political advertising policies. Prior to the Nov. 3 U.S. election, Facebook was heavily criticized for allowing misleading claims and conspiracy theories to spread widely on its platforms. In November, Leathern had tweeted that Facebook did not have “the technical ability in the short term to enable political ads by state or by advertiser.” Subsequently, Facebook lifted a temporary post-election ban on political ads in Georgia ahead of the Jan. 5 runoff that will determine which party controls the U.S. Senate. - Reuters

Treasury stretches debt maturity to 5.7 years

The maturity profile of domestic debt has lengthened to 5.7 years from 4.1 years two years ago on the back of a sustained effort to issue longer-term securities, Central bank of Kenya (CBK) has announced.

CBK governor Patrick Njoroge said during a virtual briefing following the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting last week that the option of having maturing Treasury bills rolled over using medium-term bond offerings is another option that the regulator is considering as a means of lengthening the maturity profile of local debt.

Such bonds, he said, are useful for lengthening the maturity profile of domestic debt, something that the CBK and Treasury have been trying to do.

The Treasury has obtained 97.1 percent of its domestic borrowing target of Sh389.7 billion for the current fiscal year, sparing the government the need to raid the market with any urgency in the next month.
